I'm thinking about setting up a site for international web design. I live in Israel and I do web design locally. I was thinking of designing for customers from other countries and charge money through PayPal or by checks.
Do you think it's possible to do web design without ever meeting your client or even talking to them on the phone? Do you think this kind of thing could work?
Also, how many of you web designers get projects through your internet site (rather than YellowPages listings, newspaper ads, mouth to ear and other "old" marketing venues)?

I don't advertise anywhere locally. All of my business is strictly through the Internet or word of mouth (referrals). I have traveled to meet some of my clients but only a select few (maybe 2 out of 30). The rest are all via email and telephone. Once you get your foot in the door and gain some exposure I'm sure you can make it work.
Most of the international developers I know have toll free numbers or a local number in the US. That way people feel comfortable working with them. Gaining a respectable portfolio is really the key though.

Thanks! I guess my Hebrew sites don't count towards a portfolio. I'll have to put up a couple more sites in English. The ones I have are content sites (see my signature) and not the kind of work I want to offer.

If you want to penetrate or expand to cater for the international market, I would recommend that you team up with someone from that country.
This way you get first-hand info/support from your partner/associates to do the neccessary work for you which you are unable to provide for example banking facilities where there are some restrictions for non-resident/citizen
and you can concentrate on web designing from you place of origin.

That's a good idea NSS. Especially now as I can't get money through Paypal (see my other thread in this forum).
Anyone interested?
