It depends, my success is through the projects i undertake rather than my own online business.
When i'm in full control of the site then it comes down to sales, but usually i just like seeing the site progress through the SERPs.
I guess the most satisfying project has been helping my dad's business. From being in serious trouble this time last year to now taking £100k of business each month. All leads are from a combination of a new website, SEO and AdWords. Offline marketing just can't compete with the same expenditure!
As a 16y/o I havn't succeeded in too many major things, allthough I'm prety sure I'll be adding annother one to the list soon. And being pleased with what you doin and your work is aslo top for me too Mr.Cat
As a 13y/o, to excel in my examinations as well as to accomplish learning XHTML, CSS, PHP, etc, that's becoming partof an administrator/webmaster. That's an achievement for me.
I am reselling dedicated servers and each brings me about $100 - $250/month. I have 6 servers now. Might want to try it. Check the links below in my signature. They are helpful.

for myself success means making > $1000 per mth
Being happy is most important to me. Having said that I couldn't see myself living on a VERY SMALL income like others who might believe they could make do with whatever income they have.
As long as I am making money and comfortable with my income and enjoying what I do, then all is well! I could double my hours, make a lot more money, and be more "successful" but I would be a LOT less happy, probably more stressed and not have much free time. That would just make it all a waste.
How do you measure any success?....I though I was sucessful online when I generated my first 11c from google addwords!, Thn it was 11c a day, Then I was chuffed with my first $1 day...and you build from there....Life success would be using all my gifts to put me in a place where I wasn;t dependant on any job to pay for the social infrunstructure we battle against every day...
I view every day I put in effort to get an extra person interested in having a look around my site is a success...
Money can be one of the clear signs of success of every web based business and project but after securing a monthly stream, offering great websites and contents to be read by people is great.

I would be happy with $500 per month but I would consider myself a success when I can quit my job.

Satisfaction is always first for me. Being happy with what I do and seeing good results. The monetary rewards are always secondary
