How do you seek out customers from your local area?

Do you have any suggestions about seeking out customers that need web sites from your local area? What I am finding is that many people around still don't have any idea what a web site can do for them. Even when you show them examples of what they can have or what you can do, they have a lot of trouble envisioning how it is going to work for them. I was thinking maybe I should start to offer to set up a sample page for them before I do anything for which I charge them.

Thanks. That's a really good idea. What I was thinking is not just how to make them see what a website does but how to actually get the customers. People don't seem to respond to yellow pages or leaving business cards posted on shopping center bulletin boards. But along the lines of what you were thinking, do you think it would be cool to design them a free banner and then write a brief description on exactly what you would include on their site to make it useful and effective? Since every business is different, this would target their own interests. I often have people say things like: "I don't think a pet grooming business (or whatever business) would really benefit from having a site."

yea thats a good idea, and also you show them how then can get people to thier site from google, and other search engines.....for ex: you said pet grooming, thier are many many pet owner forums that people could advertise for thier site in, show them that.

This would be very tricky, because when it come to local area it will be very difficult to target your customers within the web, but in this case i would rather suggest you the conventional methods such as posters and banners

Normally, I use email campaign as well as local news papers to advertise, apart from that I am ranking well for local google search, So, that really gives me more traffic and leads, and makes me happy rather than off line advertising,

Building them a very basic sample is a good idea. Another good idea would be to show them a leading competitor’s website that is in the same field as them. Most of the time people just need a good visual so they can understand.
