Hello,

I run an ecommerce site. I get decently good traffic, and run ad campaigns. Conversion however is lower than my liking. Does anybody have any suggestions about how to convert prospective customers in to actual customers. Any kind of suggestions would be welcome. Thanks. Sam.

Can you provide a URL? There could be design/usability issues.

I work in this exact arena, so should be able to offer you some help.

Firstly, make sure your adverts are targeted correctly. Thousands of visitors are pointless if none of them are interested in your products.

Second, direct traffic to the correct pages. If you are doing PPC advertising, send people to a page relevant to the advert, not just to your home page.

For instance, if you sell fish, rather than advertising on the keyword 'fish' and sending people to your homepage get qualified links and send them directly to the appropriate page. (i.e. for the keyword 'Koi' send them to the page that's about Koi).

Next up, optimise your order process. I believe people should be able to get from the product page to the payment page in no more than three clicks (one being the click from the product to the cart, the other being from the cart to the delivery details page and then to the payment page).

Don't ask for more information than you need in your order process. I see so many order processes that ask for things like title (does it matter if the customer is a Mr or Mrs?) or fax number. The smaller the form, the less intimidating it appears to the user.

If you ask for separate billing and delivery addresses, default to 'my delivery address is the same as my billing address' and give people a checkbox that allows them to reveal the delivery address box only if they untick that box.

Shipping - keep it simple. Ideally, offer free delivery in your home country, this will give users a huge incentive to buy from you rather than someone else. Used fixed rates wherever possible rather than shipping based on weight.

There are dozens of other little tips I could give, but I'd need to see the site to give you specifics.

I've just noticed that this is a really old post, but I've written a response, so I may as well post it anyway - these tips are useful for anyone looking to increase conversion rates on their website.

Hi Andy,

Good post on an old thread..

Another way to deal with this is collect the info on a few quick screens, keep it moving, like the option on Ubercart...
