Most effective use of a blog for a business site I've seen, was to use it as their website itself.

XHTML 1.0 Strict/clean layout/and a ready-made framework to add your logo and elements. Just add your plugins and security stuff, and forget just blogging, use the blog itself as your website!

I used business blog before. I create article related to products and post the links of products on site. Blogging is effective if you have great content on your blog.

I TOTALLY agree with NiteWatcher. Have your web site and blog all in one. Then the information is more up to date, has more of a collaborative feel which is very good for customers. Then they feel like they are part of a group and important. They also get to know the writer/author on a more personal level.

Are you saying that it is good to direct your business site users to the blog? That, as I understand is only one source of traffic... are there any other ways in which you go about increasing traffic to your business blog?

They are effective for getting you traffic from search engines.
They also offer a way to communicate with your visitors/customers, keep them updated, and initiate discussions.
Personally, i have never created a blog. I simply don't have the time to write.

It sounds to me like you're putting the cart before the horse. A blog is a way to communicate to your audience, not a way to drive traffic in and of itself. If you create a well-designed blog primarily to communicate something of substance to your users/customers/stakeholders/the media/the public, then the blog has some worthwhile purpose. Usually, traffic will then follow, but maximally as much as your business (not your blog) warrants. Sometimes you still won't get a lot of traffic, for example if your target audience is small; but generating traffic shouldn't be your goal, instead communicating something substantial to the appropriate audience should be.
