Ryan Stiles is my favorite. He and Colin Mochrie together is about as good as it gets. It's like they can read each other's mind.

Oooh, Who's Line is it Anyway! Haven't seen that in ages. Did you see the one where they had Robin Williams on? That was one of the funniest shows ever.
I also like Jon Stewart and Chris Rock (just to bring things back to the North American side!). From movies and television, I'll have to mention Mike Myers, a proud Canadian
Liam is gradually converting me to the English stuff though

With just the teaser at top of the post, I must say I like practically all others mentioned. I don't know some of the American or NZ comedies though, although Robin Williams and John Carey are funny.
As for British comedy, it leads the world in my opinion. I see Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson were not actually mentioned, they rule, especially in The Young Ones and Bottom. They are also brilliant in the stage versiion of Bottom. Eddie Izzard is a great alternative comedian (was watching him last night on YouTube!) Was also watching Reeves and Mortimer in Bang Bang - My faves there are 'Tom Fun and Derek' and 'The Club'.
Also on my list are:
Jasper Carrot
Billy Connolly
John Cleese and the Monty Python team
Les Dawson
Les Dennis
Dawn French
Victoria Wood
Jack Dee
Julie Walters
Jen Saunders
Alan Davies
Stephen Fry
Hugh Laurie
Phil Jupitus
Harry Enfield
Paul Whitehouse
Lenny Henry
Griff Rhys-Jones
Mel Smith
Steve Coogan
Peter Sellers
Kenneth Williams
Norman Wisdom
James Dreyfus
Tony Robinson
Ricky Gervais
Rod Hull and Emu
There's probably a few more, but these spring to mind at the mo.

By person: Cleese, Gilliam, Chapman, Idle, Jones, Palin, Atkinson, Fry, Laurie, Elton, Barker, Corbett, Milligan, Hill, French, Saunders, Dee, Clunes, Enfield, Anderson, McGrath, Blessed, Izzard, Connolly, Greig, O'Hanlon ... no, that's not complete.
By production: Monty Python, Blackadder, The Thin Blue Line, A Bit of Fry & Laurie, The Two Ronnies, 'Allo 'Allo, The Benny Hill Show, French and Saunders, Father Ted, Black Books, The Young Ones, Red Dwarf, The Brittas Empire, Smack the Pony, Green Wing, Big Train ... still not complete.
I guess only the BBC Comedy Guide covers everything.

Abhi! You beat me to it with pretty much all of those! Am also a fan of the more disgusting, unintelligent types of comedy. Like Bo Selecta, The Bear, the first and second series of Little Britain. Less disgusting, more weird is: The Mighty Boosh. More topical: Have I Got News For You.
Most of the main stream comedy in the UK starts life on Radio 4, which you can get anywhere around the globe, if you like that sort of thing. My particular favourites on the radio are: The Museum of Everything, Just a Minute and The Department. Naturally since they'll try anything on Radio4, there's a lot of dross too.
Have you seen Little Britain Abhi? I would imagine you'd like it. What about, Absolute Power?
As for just comedians: Jimmy Carr, Rory Bremner (plus Bird and Fortune of course!), count me in for Ryan Stiles too Matt. I used to love Who's Line is it Anyway. There are more, but I can't remember any at the moment.

No, I haven't, and yes I think I would! I saw Lucas and Walliams on Parkinson once, they were great. The show isn't broadcast here, unfortunately. Nor is (or was) Absolute Power, Bo Selecta, The Mighty Boosh, The Fast Show, The Detectives, all of which I'd like to see someday.
After thinking some more, I would add to my list classics like Open All Hours, Dad's Army, Are You Being Served, Yes [Prime] Minister, Fawlty Towers, On the Buses, the Carry On movies, Last of the Summer Wine, Ab Fab, Only Fools and Horses... I'm inclined to think the UK has a monopoly on English-language comedy.
But there are a few North American comedians I like. Stiles and Mochrie are the stuff of legend. Bill Maher, Bill Hicks, Woody Allen, Jerry Seinfeld, Robin Williams, Cheech and Chong, Steve Martin, Leslie Nielsen, Denis Leary, and Russell Peters come to mind. I think the best American comedy -- that I've been exposed to -- is in productions like South Park, Family Guy, The Simpsons, Futurama, et al.
Can't say much for NZ comedy. There are local comedians but I just don't find them that funny. I'm not so sure about Australia, though. (<-- Heresy.)

I second JeevesBond about Just a minute. Also of note on Radio Four are The News Quiz, Dead Ringers, The Now Show, the Party Line (need an understanding of current affairs in Britain to get the jokes in the last one) and, perhaps best of all, I'm Sorry, I haven't a Clue. A lot of the best of these programs are repeated on http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain (BBC 7) and are well worth a listen
On the TV, I like 'Allo 'Allo because it is quite so politically incorrect, as well as other things like As Time Goes By, Keeping up Appearances, Dad's Army, The Good Life and Yes Minister. And yes, the UK does have the monopoly on English Language Comedy!!!

Funny how hard it is to name a complete list! I think you mentioned several people I should've too, Mandy.

These lists are great, next time am trying to remember the name of some comedian I want to watch I'll come here.
Me too! Most people have mentioned plenty of comedians that should have been in my list!

I have never heard of David Strassman, but I looked him up. He is the creator of puppetronics:
His Edinburgh 2005 festival quotes:
'same dark, disturbingly twisted mind! Eagerly anticipated Fringe return of Chuck Wood and Ted E. Bare.'
I do like a bit of dark comedy, particularly the League of Gentlemen and I think that 'Little Britain' has a tint of darkness to it aswell in some scenes.
I must admit, you don't get alot of quality ventriloquists (spelling?) about nowadays, but I have yet to see this one!

Strassman is a master at what he does.
Chuck Wood is a teenage boy puppet, always up to no good, Ted E Bare, is a tedy bear (if you couldnt guess), hes a bit naive about life and gets picked on a lot from Chuck.
A phrase I enjoy:
Ted: Make the demon stop dave
Chuck: Im not a demon, im the devil himself (then his eyes glow red)
chuck is also known to spit (squirt water) on guests etc, strassman has perfected the hand up a puppets butt routine
I think he is either american or canadain
There are also other characters, but the two mantioned are the main ones.

I'm a big fan of Jimmy Carr, he's so dead pan and has the same dry but obvious sense of humour that I have. Then there's Lee Evans for when I'm feeling silly

Never heard of him - but I looked him up. Apparently he has just accused his dad of harrassment and jim (dad) was arrested. He got paid a substantial amount of money in damages. Anyway, that's not important (Kevin Turvey again). He appears to have done quite a bit of entertainment from tv to radio to festivals. Yet to see this one.
By the way, does anyone remember Kevin Turvey?
