Hey,

Just wondering what you guys think about this article?

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20001116/tc/internet_names.html

7 new suffixes have been approved for domain names. I don't think they will be as popular as the ".com" but I would like to get my hand on a few of them.

I think there will be another "land rush" to get the good names. But people have been conditioned to think .com, sometimes .net or .org. It would take a lot of marketing to get people to think other extensions.

BTW, didn't notice in the article when the new suffixes will be available. Any idea?

I don't know, I think that as internet use becomes more widespread and more people become power users, more people will recognize different domain suffixes. It might be a little early for this now, but in a couple of years it won't be a problem I don't think. Even my mom, a very casual internet user, knows what .ca means.

yeah, I agree. I wasn't to keen on .to or .cc but I like .name / .info / .biz. They are pretty good

ya... I'm going to get some .info domains!

here's a question for you, how long will extensions get? extensions used to be restricted to 3 characters (anyone remember DOS.. or earlier?)

I think only as long as they need to be. like it would never be .business (waaay to long) I think they will max out on 4 or 5 at the most, but try and stick to 3.

okay I just read that the .biz domain extensions will cost about $2000 to register and $150 to maintain (not sure if thats yearly).....whoa. They say its to deter anyone from registering it. They only want serious businesses. Apparently some other registrar will be charging the same

another question to ponder...
will domain extensions alway be in english characters?

.info should be .nfo...

..just my opinion..

I'm just stunned that .web didn't get approved. I'd hate to be one of the people who paid $35 to WebTLD to pre-register a domain...

yeah, I agree Mike, thats what I was thinking.

.web doesn't seem that bad. But I guess maybe they are heading away from more general domain extensions and more towards specialised domain extensions.

i think .web didn't make it due to a dispute between those that did the pre-registering and the corp that has taken over network solutions.

I don't... why make it more confusing than it already is? That's like taking Kool.com over Cool.com... why would you want that? People can't just hear the domain name and go to the site because it has a different spelling than it sounds. Just my opinion.

Because it is consistent with the Three-Letter-Extension idea, and also it holds true to the three letter DOS extension idea. .NFO files are included in many DOS applications, and consistency keeps people from getting confused. And it's not pronounced "INFO" it's pronounced "N-FO" so the problem with recognition is moot. You don't hear people say "Dot Communication" [I think that's what .com stands for] they say "Dot Com."

Mike has a point too. So I'm sticking with my thoughts and still think they should of made it .nfo Smiling

Close mike, it stands for Commercial I believe. And what you said is also why I agree it should be .nfo

Personally, I think having a more clear and as less confusing as possible domain name extension is more important than being consistent with the three-digit extension pattern. And aren't "N-Fo" and "Info" pronounced the same? This is not a case of abbreviating the extention as you said in your dot-com example, it's a case of using slang to shorten a word. Again, IMHO.

Then what would we shorten .name to? .nam? .nme? Four letter TLD extensions are fine in my opinion. They open up possabilities as well...
