What are your favourite books?

Just a conversational question: what are your favoutie books? What sorts of books do you normally read?

I mostly read general fiction - the sort of thing that doesn't be long to any particular genre. I tend to be as picky about books as I am about websites and often don't finish what I start.

Here are some of my favouties:

  • Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens (set in my home town and is - gasp - actually really good)
  • Observatory Mansions by Edward Carey (very strange and original)
  • Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See (set in 19th century China, footbinding and all. I like books with different cultural settings.)
  • The Kite Runner (interesting story, very well written)

I also sometimes read non-fiction books about web design, yoga, and assorted other topics of interest. Right now I'm reading Designing Web Usability by Steve Krug which is 5 years old but still interesting and useful! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in usability.

Side question: What did you think about the DaVinci Code? Will post my thoughts on that later!

Favouties, is that the Canadian version? Use favorites in the US and favourites in UK I believe

As far as books go, I really have too many to mention. The last one that I read the other day was 'Prey' by Michael Crichton. Not all that great but a fast read. Before that it was 'Art of Warfare in the Western World'. Before that it was 'The Screwtape Letters' by C.S. Lewis. Before that it was 'Great Women in the Christian Church'. Before that it was 'Absolute Postfix'. Of course, interspersed with reading the Bible. Most of those are in the last 10 days or so.

I love anything that is historical since so much can be learned by history.

I thought that it must have been a Canadian expression since you typed it several times. A search on Google yielded a lot of results for that spelling.

The other thing that I thought that it may have been is that Busy had somehow used your login to post.

Should we tell her she missed two of them Wink

How could you think I typed that? Way to many big words for me, plus I thought the DaVinci Code was a movie Wink

Hmmm, you're not far wrong it was written like it wants to be made into one.

Oh and I made the mistake of mentioning that book in Megan's presence once... Be careful she may start ranting Wink

I'm a bit of a sci-fi geek, anything by Iain M Banks is good IMO, although I'm reading "The Wasp Factory" by Iain Banks (same guy different genre) and it's really good. I can also recommend Complicity by him as well, his books are always scarily well thought out.

My favourite has to be "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque, it is about war, but not from the perspective you'd expect.

I've also read almost every Paulo Coehlo book available as well, simple, clever and inspiring. All the happy-factor of self-help without the patronising undertones! Laughing out loud

That's a powerful book . . . and has been made into an even more powerful film.

Although I think I've read most of his stuff by now, I'm a huge Isaac Asimov fan. Nowadays, I read mostly nonfiction. The last book I finished was The Power of Approachability, by Scott Ginsberg. Cool/interesting fact about this guy: He's been wearing a nametag 24/7 for the past few years. (hellomynameisscott.com)

actually the da vinci code is now on works to becoming a movie,
most of the time I read web books, PC books, Engineering books, and for my other readings I like classics like Le Moitre D' Arthur, or something like that,
most present books are re-writes of old one which has a more poetic writing style before... I also read those that are actually given to me, most recently, "who moved my cheese", "the secrets of the bible code"... Im a reader... I read a lot...

Funny my niece almost named her kid Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird.

I have read all the HP books and have loved them. Smiling I usually read a lot of chick lit, although this is waiting for me to read this week: Memoir of a Geisha, they are releasing a movie soon about the book and I wanted to read the book first. Usually books are better than the movies in my opinion.
