In case you don't know, 10:00 AM is a big hour for talk shows where I live. I was flipping through the channels a couple minutes ago (there was nothing good on by the way) and I noticed that on every single talk show the host was sitting on the right, and then I started thinking about all the shows that weren't on right now and it was the same way.
Why do all talk show hosts sit on the right side of our screen? Is there some sort of balance to this that I don't know about or is it all just coincedence?

I don't watch many talk shows (or much TV for that matter), but one I occasionally catch is Parkinson. In the current version of the series, Parkinson sits on the left. Frost sat on the left side too, as I recall. Tim Sebastian sat on the left for Hardtalk, though I recently saw an episode with a new host (not Sackur) sitting on the right. Many -- possibly the majority -- of the talk shows in NZ have hosts on the left side too, but I'm not certain as I don't watch TV enough.
Could it be an American thing?

The ones I've seen, Letterman etc have the guest on the hosts right (our left when viewing).
Probably the first person that did a talk show had a better left profile than right
On similar note, was ad on tv tonight about Opera Winfery (am sure that not correct spelling) been doing it for 20 years

It's a position of dominance.
You will notice that in most cases the talk show host's chair is also higher than the guest's.
