Skype is definitely attracting a lot of attention among Wall Street pros.
According to this article in Business Week:
Quote:
More than 12 million Web surfers have downloaded the free Skype software and registered as users since the program appeared 14 months ago. The software turns a PC equipped with a microphone, speakers, and broadband connection into a 21st century telephone. Placing a call to another Skype user is as easy as clicking on a name in a pop-up window. Up to five people can pile into a free conference call, and the sound quality is often better than that of conventional phones. Skype's growth is accelerating as subscribers urge their friends to come aboard. The number of new registered users is now 70,000 a day, up from 30,000 in May.
Quote:
It was invented by Niklas Zennström, a 39-year-old Swede, and Janus Friis, a 28-year-old Dane -- the same duo who infuriated the recording industry when they created the popular KaZaA music-downloading service in 2000. Now they're doing it again. With operations in London and Tallinn, Estonia, Skype is such a radical departure from any previous phone company that it threatens the very foundations of the trillion-dollar-a-year telecom industry. It has no phone lines or pricey switching equipment of its own, instead using subscribers' PCs and the public Internet to run its network.
However,

Already, that ambition is drawing rivals' fire. AT&T points out that Skype doesn't control its own network, so it can't provide the dependability required by most corporations.

It's going to be interesting to watch how Skype develops!

I got the Linux client some time ago... never had anyone to try it out with. I'm really curious as to how it holds up on less-than-broadband connections, as that may determine its success a great deal, especially with free/cheap models like this and open source being so attractive to developing countries and non-profit institutes.

Yeah, I have used Skype before, it is actually really good. I really recommend it to those who have broadband...
As to the question about the dial thing, there is about a 10 second lag. I was talking to someone on dial up using broadband

I've used it and its fun, but when i did use it the other person couldn't hear me properly it kept "dropping" apparently. but i could hear her fine. not sure whever it was my mic or her PC. You can't seem to do much setup on it which is strange. Like i can test my mic to see if its working fully or not.
Other than that i think its an excellent idea and if your always IMing someone why not talk to em instead.?

Thanks for the feedback. I was waiting to see other peoples' reactions to Skype before I invested in a sound card, mike, etc..
Also, I've read that if you're not on broadband, there's a few seconds' lag between replies.

OK...
I bought a cheapo headset and now I'm skyping all over.
This is great software. You can contact other Skype users for free, and you can contact non-users for the cost of a local phone call.

Another thing I noticed: When dialing non-Skype phone numbers, you may experience frequent drop-offs in your connection. If you're running Windows, this might be due to the QoS feature in Network Connections.
So, disable QoS!
In Windows 2000 or XP, you can do this by right-clicking the Network Connections icon, clicking on Properties and then unchecking the QoS Packet Scheduler. Then, reboot your PC.
