Raq2 or Linux?

Hello!
I find myself in a very difficult position. I'm getting a dedicated server, and can't decide what to get. The Raq2 is easy to administrate, and a linux box more configurable.
A linux server(Cel-333,64Mb,4Gb) would cost $195 and a Raq2(Mips250,16Mb,3.2Gb) costs $200.

I'm no Linux expert which is why I'm looking at the Raq2. I know some telnet commands, but I suspect there is more to Linux than the commands I've used so far

I need your input. What do you suggest I as a beginner start off with?

Hmmm- very hard decision. If you have to time learn linux then I would recommend the linux server. Also, looking at the specification it looks like the linux server has more. I've never tried a RaQ2, but I'm sure they work fine.

Hi,
Raq2 is using Linux as their operating system, so you can configure it to your needs by telneting to the box.
Hope this helps.

First off, where do you plan to host your server at?

As for your main problem, raq2 vs. linux, I have been a long time raq users. However, my work with my varrious raq servers and client servers has only increased my dislike of a raq server. For some reason, they seam to handle far less accounts, perl scripts and such then a normal linux server (although the raq3i's are suppose to be better).

I would advise you to use the linux system if you can figure out enough linux to do so. There are also many control panels for llinux to try out. Good luck!

Hi Ted,
As stated on my previous posts, RAQ2 uses Linux as their operating system. So they can't be compared with each other. Correc me if I'm wrong.
Thank you.

Cobalt uses an older version of linux with many modificaitons. Up until the raq3i, they had some cheap processor and basically were only good for low ussage sites.

Take for example a free homepage site using the homefree script -- while a normal linux box could handle close to 40,000 accounts, a raq server ssems to get slow at 12,000 and croak at 16,000.

Raq servers have their uses but max out before most.

If you take a look at rackspace.com, you wil find out that raq2 only uses EDO RAMs and IDE hard drives on their server, whereas a decent dedicated server always uses SDRAM and SCSI hard drives. This is the reason why RAQ is slow. Their hardware are meant for reasonable sites only. It is not the old linux system of RAQ slows down the web site, its the hardware, but i won't deny that server configuration and optimization is vital though . I personaly believe that RAQ can perform as well as a normal server provided they are able to use high-end hardware, but sadly they don't.

I decided to go with the Linux server. The fact that it now comes with 10 Gb of hdd doesn't hurt
