ranting about email
Okay... how long does it take you to respond to an email?
I sit online all day. I check email a bit less frequently than I used to, but I think I can still reply to an email in about an hour or two. Though, I can take a few days to reply to pen-pals. I don't exactly have enough excitement to write daily, ya know?
Today, I sent two emails to two seperate people who maintain servers I have access to (2 servers, 1 person per server, 1 email per person). Unfortunately, I currently do not have access to them, hence my emails. One email sent about 10.5 hours ago. The other maybe 8 hours ago. Neither have replied yet.
What's got me in knots is that I had time available to work on these servers today, but I didn't have access to them. Now, no one's gonna die, nothing's gonna break, and no potential income is being forfeit. But it frustrates me that sys admins can't reply to an email within the day.

Is there any way these people would give you a phone #?

The one guy is my cousin. He lives 10 minutes from me, and I spend a couple weekends at his house every month. I suppose his excuse will be that he's getting married on the 8th. Pretty lame excuse, eh?
I don't have a phone # for the other guy. Never needed one in the past. Don't exactly *need* one now, but if I had it, I would have called.

I check my emails every minute I'm online so I'm pretty quick to reply to emails. Just on occasion, the program crashes and can't be bother starting it up.
Congratulation for your brother

Ugh. I gotta disagree here. I used to think of email of something I had to keep open all day and reply "right now" but these days I open my mail client at selected intervals -- otherwise, boy! what a productivity drainer! I'd never get anything done.
And as for replying times, I'll deal wth you in order of priority, on my own time.
Same with answer phone messages, letters in my in tray and everything else. I'm tired of responding out of knee-jerk reactions all the time. It ruins my schedule and puts me off course for the day.
That tends to be my theory these days, anyhow.

So much spam in e-mails these days i have a filter that deletes anything not on my safe list, so i usually respond to new mails, as i know they are from someone decent
And like you said even though its no life or death matter it is frustrating, if i had been you i would have walked the 10 minutes to your cousins.

I reply daily or sooner, even if it's a "can't talk, children hanging from every limb, will answer next month" sort of message.

I called my cousin today. Buhaha! I got the new SSH info, but still not full access. =[ I'm missing access to mysql now. Apparently the user/pass is different for that, doh! I think I'll "visit" him in this weekend.

I usually take abou- ritalin? mmm, ritalin...
Depends on what I'm doing, or not doing, and who's mailing. Family and friends usually wait a week, depending on the subject. Anything related to numbers and electricity
takes a day at most. Particularly, anything to do with websites/servers takes a few minutes. Most other things take a day or two.
Trouble is, I get slack often. If I don't manage to get a reply fired back within the day, I don't manage to do one for a week, or longer. I check mail once a day, except under special request, and don't have my inbox open all the time.

man, I check my email every five minutes. Else I have to deal with 1400 messages at once and I get panicky.
