How important is the domain name to a successful business?

Say youre selling footballs

and footballs.com is taken ...

What other steps can you take to make good sales?

Any opinions?

google and the other searchengines use the domain name alot for ranking. Best to have a keyword phrase in it. i.e. cheapkidsfootballs.com, your key word phrase would be " cheap kids footballs" and you'd try and rank in google for this.

A domain is not really that important, you can get away with any domain. Having keywords in it good but not necessary.

I wrote an article on this very subject here: http://www.getasiteonline.com/?postid=3

It's geared more towards small businesses, but hopefully you'll get the idea. I think it's a must for small businesses to have their own domain.

You could always do letters for the domain you want, or a catchy phrase. I saw one the other day: another.dot.com. Made me chuckle.

We had a hosting business, we used our names into a hosting company: GNS Hosting

Relevancy of the name is the key IMO. Choosing a domain name relevant to your business can attract walk in business. If you register a domain name that matches the concept of your business you might draw the attention of the visitors in search of that topic.
