Surehands,

The topic of a website is a very personal thing... you should go with something that you are interested in, not one that "has an income from advertising space"... of course, to find something that you enjoy that can eventually bring in money for advertising is the goal.

Also, this entire process is easier said than done. My game was going for almost 2 years before I was actually making money off it. Now, I am making some rather nice money via the adverting (and AllAdvantage).

nope Smiling
I am doing fairly well financially and see no reason to burden anyone with ads as the aim of TWF is solely to aid webmasters rather than exploit them...

Do you have Robin Hood in your family tree?

I dont think there is anything wrong with making money out of helping people. Of course you cannot advertise anything that would be a bad choice for webmasters.

Well, its your business. Its nice to hear that you are doing well finacially. Was there some positive change in your Life we didnt hear about? Smiling

JP,

You already have an idea and a great one at that. (Actually, at least two but that is a different story).

TWF is an absolutely UNIQUE website... there is no other like it... lol

All kidding aside, this is a great website and Joseph will find that his site will flounder if he even attempts to continue with that ill scheme.

Matt

PS. I thought you were going to work for him?

I am just curious as to how this forum began? Maybe this should be a new discussion.

Who had the idea?
How did you get traffic to the site?
How did you get sponsors?
How long has it been running for?
How did you find moderators?
Where in the world is it hosted?
Who maintains the server?
Is it much of a job keeping it up & running?
Do I ask too many questions?

OK, I can make guesses at least- Smiling

Who had the idea?
Pretty sure it was JP.

How did you get traffic to the site?
Moderator Sites, What-Next, Searches

How did you get sponsors?
Bet they asked JP about it

How long has it been running for?
I forget, I joined in March though.

How did you find moderators?
JP asks helpful forum members..

Where in the world is it hosted?
dids.com I believe

Who maintains the server?
Chad, right?

Is it much of a job keeping it up & running?
Not too sure there...

Do I ask too many questions?
No, because you answer so many more than you ask. Wink

And my guesses (some of which are not guesses):

Who had the idea?
Same as John's assumption.

How did you get traffic to the site?
Same as John's assumption. Not to mention the banners that moderators display on their sites. I also think word-of-mouth probably plays the biggest part.

How did you get sponsors?
Same as John's assumption. There is no sponsors of TWF right now (paying that is - every member is a sponsor) but I think in the past they approached JP.

How long has it been running for?
I have been a member/moderator since May of this year, but I have found posts (that JP made) from as early as January of 1999 so I would assume that was the launch time.

How did you find moderators?
I know that I made the suggestion for both forums that I moderate. I am not sure how some of the very earliest moderators were chosen, but I wasn't really chosen, rather I offered my help.

Where in the world is it hosted?
TWF is hosted on one of our servers which are physically located in New Jersey, USA.

Who maintains the server?
The Dynamic Internet Solutions staff maintains the servers (I am not as server maintenance knowledgable as some believe Smiling) - Mainly our systems administrators.

Is it much of a job keeping it up & running?
It probably wouldn't be as big of a job to keep it running if it only hosted TWF, but it is a shared server so yes, it is a little difficult to keep maintained. Technology breaks for unexplainable reasons (some are explainable though) but we do our best to keep it running 24/7.

Do I ask too many questions?
Not at all... My opinion is that of John's on this question! You are definitly a valuable asset to TWF.

Thanks all Smiling

Who had the idea?
- yours truly

- What Next? / Moderators sites / SE / FFA (no more) / Directories / Newsletters

How did you get sponsors?
What sponsors Smiling

How long has it been running for?
- About a year...

How did you find moderators?
- Various way, by asking, or by people volunteering.

Do I ask too many questions?
- hmmnnn

I have an idea for you. I am looking for developers to design web sites for me for equity. I already own the domains, and have a Host waiting. All I need is a Webmaster to help me out be designing some 3 page sites, and plugging in portal services. The verticle Portals will drive traffic in several ways, and there are several ways that the sites will make money.
