Has the Internet even been around 22 years?! Jeepers, it only just came to our town a couple of years ago when they put it in the library. Ms. Feckles was ever so delighted.

Are you serious? You can get the internet through absolutly any phone line... you do have phones in your town dont you?

Not necessarily. Iirc, normally the local exchange needs to be upgraded with facility for it, and there must be an ISP offering it. I know a lot of people who live in fairly remote areas where their best option is satellite connectivity because of the lack of ISPs or (cheap) cable/dsl facilities.
oh no, I was far too young. I was just one of the kids-of-geeks who chatted with pals over the phone with those phone cuff modems and my dad's computer, and got immediately solicited by perverts.
No, my friends and family protected my innocent self from the deviants who already lived online... It was interesting, though, talking through the computer like that. I was hooked, and when I finally made it to university, I bought a modem for myself (up to 14.4, top of the LINE then, baby) and used it to talk to my dad and hook up to the university.
Later, I finally got off bulletin boards and onto the web, relatively late to the game in 1995.
I'm 35, and plenty old enough to be embarrassed now about how nerdy I was then! And to think, I wasn't one of the group making their own computers in briefcases or trying to out program each other on the TRS-80s in the school...
Heck Greg, that's brief? Good article though, I'm - unfortunately - a little young to remember all that happening and have only been on the Internet a mere 5-6 years!
That's shocking that is... I sometimes forget that being in a small country has it's advantages. In the UK dialup access is available anywhere with a phoneline (which is pretty much all populated areas!).

Hey, now...I read in the newspaper that Mink, LA was the last place to receive telephone service...the first phone call was made from that town on February 1, 2005
