For those who haven't heard...
See http://code.google.com/summerofcode.html
Google has launched a competition of sorts, to encourage students (18+) around the world to participate in Free/Open Source development by contributing code to popular FOSS organisations such as Apache, GNOME, Perl, Python and Google itself. The idea is to get individual participants to work on and complete useful, real-world projects of their choice or creation, over the summer (or winter as it is here). If a submission is satisfactory, there's a US$4,500 stipend to be won (200 of them!).
Sounds like a fine, fun idea to me. I intend to take part, myself. I'm looking into some of the Python ideas to pick one to work on.
I know some of you are students (over 18?) and this might be a fun thing to do. There are a good few web-oriented projects to work with, such as Drupal, Mambo, Gallery and Live Journal, if you're interested.
