lately i have seen in this forum that websites are getting more boring Shocked people only want you to use 3 colors and no gifs, flash,or even fun java scripts for fear of putting people into epileptic fits or something. I remember when you had to scroll down into dark heavaly animated sites to find some good content. It was not always enjoyable but now I am getting kinda bored!! Anyone else feel this way. Company websites should be professional and clean but can they still have a little fun left in them?

THats what I was trying to do...
I missed those days... I can replicate any design I want and follow design procedures that Im sure everyone will really like, but I chose not to... We advocate change, we advocate standards (css); but let us not make "designing" standard...

As many websites (such as homestarrunner.com) show, fun does not mean ugly. All those things you listed CAN be used in websites to make them cool/fun but too many amateur webdesigners have abused these features. Yes, these features often have a bad reputation. No, they don't fully deserve it.

So I say, so long as the result does not result in a blinding, computer-crashing, nine pages tall, nor UGLY website, then go for it! Laughing out loud

Ahhh, yes I remember the "lamer of the week" award (can't even remember what site that was now), the most noteable winner had something like 20 frames and was quoted on there saying: "I just love frames, they're great." Oh dear, it was funny then and kind of surreal now, those were the days when everyone was using tripod, xoom and geocities.

Guess you're right, there is a bit of nostalgia for that but the web has moved on, massively. It's like kids tv, you remember all the programs you used to watch as a kid, and think about how great they were, but watch them again now and you'll ruin the whole illusion... They'll look naff Smiling

I don't think it's necessarily the bells and whisles that are the problem. I think most designers would agree that those things get stale fast. What I find is that newer designers tend to go with a tried and true formula rather than trying something new. Then you end up with all these bland boxy layouts with shades of blue color schemes. Websites always need to serve their purpose first and foremost (why are people here, what do they want to see or do?) but with personal sites, entertainment sites, even certain types of company or corporate sites there's no reason why you shouldn't have a little fun with colours and layout ideas.

Actually, I think there are fewer resources out there to help new designers than there used to be. I mean, the CSS Zen garden is pretty much over their heads (it's over my head most of the time!).
