The excuse they're using is that it doesn't have a "substantial historical track record of providing safe and reliable financial and/or banking related services." However, they also changed their "Safe Payments Policy" to "Accepted Payments Policy".
Interesting - I think they need each other to survive actually. That is, if Google Checkout actually is to go anywhere. Either people will stop using eBay because it doesn't take google checkout, or google checkout doesn't go anywhere because eBay doesn't take it. Although, I think they could do just fine without eBay.
I also think that eBay really needs some competition. Maybe another auction site that partners with google checkout (or if they develop their own!) would really take off. I have a bunch of stuff I'd like to get rid of but eBay is just to expensive to sell on now. I hate their interface too.

I think it's
A) Not a bad idea for eBay to be restrictive about payment methods, at least for a certain period of time.
B) eBay owns PayPal and for it to stay viable, they can't have Google coming in and trounching PayPal now can they?

All I have to say is this was no suprise to me. I have seen quite a few blogs on this subject, and most I've seen have tons of outraged eBay sellers. This one is definitely going to be an interesting battle to watch!
