I was wondering if you knew of any sites that told you of who provides DSL in your area?

I know US West does, but they are not our provider, and specifically I am trying to find information on Frontier DSL, but I can't find it.

Any help or suggestions?

I've told a lot of people this, and I don't mind repeating myself. Smiling DSL is really over rated. The only way you can get really good speeds is if you live really close to a provider.... Otherwise your speed will get slower as you move farther away.

It's best to go with something such as cable modem or possibly even satellite connection if it is available.

If DSL is available in your area most ISP’s will have coverage. Deregulation allows for a lot more competition. I would call a few local ISP’s and see what they say.

I have to disagree with Orpheus. DSL has been great!

I am only 1,900 feet from the CO and can get up to 7 MBPS speeds if I wanted to but DSL is not offered in areas that can't be served. If you can get DSL you will probably like it. But, this is all just my opinion.

If you subscribe to PC World, they had a very interesting article in their most recent issue (October 2000) about broadband (DSL and Cable) uses. You might want to read it if you can get a hold of it.

From what I've *heard*, the connection speed for DSL drops pretty fast as you move away from the CO.

Adam-
Have you asked your ISP about that speed problem?

Yes, this is true, I live on the outskirts of the radius from the site, *but* that means I can only get 384 Kbps download speeds. Really it has been great. Much better than 56K and really worth it.

Although the main page is cluttered, check out dslreports.com. Once you get into the search page, you'll be on your way...

BTW, you guys are complaining about your cable modems? I'm still stuck on a dial-up and I have no other choices in my area!

I was excited to hear that the Simpson’s are now on at 6, 8, 8:30, 11, and 11:30 PM here.. Now all that I need is a TV card so I can watch without rotating my head.

Hahaha. How did a topic about DSL turn into a discussion on the Simpsons?
