I think that since it is from cnn.com it is true. Personally, and I think for yourself, I don't want to be misunderstood. I find it sad when people get hurt(?). Yet, this is very weird and funny...I am always telling my friends that cheese will kill them and that they should switch to the veggie stuff.

I dont laugh at everyone who gets hurt, but when it involves something like that, well its brought on by the people who participate.

Hmmm. This is a new low in the world; people laughing at people who get hurt. Why? You think it's funny 'cause they were chasing cheese? What is the world coming too...

Hate to break this to you Justin, but people have been laughing at people that get hurt or have accidents since the beginning of time. No it's not funny when someone gets seriously hurt, but these people were participating in an event that has been held for a couple hundred years and probably all know the risks involved. So, yes it is funny. If somebody broke their neck or got killed, then it wouldn't be funny.

To take it one step further, probably 90% of the 'entertainment" in the world has to do with somebody getting hurt (either physically or emotionally) or killed, whether it be on TV, video game or spectator sports with examples below:

  • Earliest example - Roman Gladiators.
  • Spanish Bullfights
  • Slapstick comedy
  • Cartoons, especially the oldies like Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny, etc.
  • Boxing
  • Modern day TV Sitcoms - People laughing at other people in sometimes embarassing situations.
  • Video games - most of them revolve around killing the enemy or kicking the **** out of somebody. Maybe not funny, but still entertainment.

The list could probably go on, but I'll stop here.

That's kinda like the event in Japan where people ride a tree trunk down a steep and muddy hillside. The longer you stay on (no one makes it all the way) the more luck it's suppose to bring you.

Every year people get hurt falling off the log or getting limbs crushed under it but they still keep coming back and trying.

While those cheese-chasers are quite amusing, they'll never reach the big-time. It takes a very special person to qualify for the ultimate honor in self-destructive stupidity, The Darwin Awards.

quote:
Darwin Awards celebrate Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by commemorating the remains of the individuals who contributed to the improvement of our gene pool by removing themselves from it in a really stupid way.

Here's one nominee

quote:
2000 Darwin Awards Nominee
Confirmed True by Darwin
(1998, London) A £200,000 fine was levied against a construction firm for the deaths of two workers. The two 28-year-old men, reportedly experienced in their work, fell 100 feet after drilling a hole through thick concrete without realizing they were standing in the center of the circle. Neither was wearing a safety harness to arrest his 8-story plunge.

Many others can be obtained by visiting: http://www.darwinawards.com , but be warned. If you're the type of person that takes pity in these stupid corpses, the site is not for you. If however you're like me and celebrate that these morons managed to off themselves without taking innocent bystanders with them, you might enjoy it.

Yeah actually I do think its funny because they were chasing cheese. And Dan is very right when he says this is not something new.

Justin, its the element of danger that makes people want to try it, and it is just that which makes people laugh at them for trying it.

btw, some country people dont have much to do with their time (especially around that cheese place and in rural japan)

Anyone ever seen "America's funniest videos?"

I think people laugh at that because it's weird, and they don't think anyone got hurt. That's why I thought this cheese thing was funny...I hope I wasn't taken as criticizing. I'm a vegetarian, and my brother is vegan...so we found it funny to find out that cheese will hurt you in more ways than what is appearantly known to the medical field.

[added]
Matt, do you think you could find the video in AVI formatt...I think my brother could use it in his help talks about the dangers of cheese.
