Hi,
With my new network that I have created, I decided to add forums to it too....my question is, what do I need to do to be in compliance with the new COPPA law. Like what do I need to add so that 13 year olds and under won't post at my boards. I don't use the UBB so I don't have that COPPA thing that comes with it, so do you guys have any ideas of what I need to add to be in compliance? Thanks.

Pardon me for my ignorance please, but what is COPPA?

It stands for the Online Child Protection Act or something like that. It's some law here in the US that says children under 13 may not post on bulletin boards without parental concent, and I was just wondering what I need on my board to make sure to one under 13 posts there...

COPPA is c.r.a.p. It's stupid. When I was thirteen, I was smarter than most of my classmates.
Parental consent my sweet toosh! Who cares about this ****?! I mean, COME ON! What's to stop a kid from lieing about it, hmm? Bahhh.

COPPA doesn't only ban kids 13- fron posting...it stops anyone from taking ANY information about the child without parental consent. I heard of a few children targeted websites that had/are having to shut down for a period of time while they got all the parents for their members to fax in signed permission. Stupid...a good idea taken to a bad extreme...like normal.

Everyone here has a website. It's just that not all are worth posting (Mine! Smiling).

COPPA is an important law for web designers (around the world) to be aware of. It relates to a lot of web sites (any site requiring personal information).

You must comply with COPPA if your site is commercial in nature, directed at children under age 13 (and collects personal information from children), or if you operate a general site and have knowledge that it **may** collect personal information from children under age 13.

You can find out more about the law at www.coppa.org and www.ftc.gov

Yep, bascially all you have to do is say something like "If you are under 13 you will need a parents permission before sending any information". You get the idea, pretty easy stuff. Be creative.

I don't particularely agree with COPPA either. But, what we think about it is irrelevant.

Yes, they can easily lie about their age and not have to get parental permission... but at least you have something to fall back on. (They broke the rules, not you.)

I'm not sure that's enough... If I recall correctly, you need verifiable proof of parental permission. (A signed form that was faxed or mailed to you, for example.) I could be wrong, though.

Bug Bannon to include that feature in the next version of Bigcrapper. (Or whatever it's called now.)

Wow did mean to start such a big huge conversation. It's just that it's important that I comply because you can be fined if they find out that you are collecting info from 13 and below yr. olds. Thanks again for all your help, and thanks for this great community.

Why can't you just copy what UBB does, and put it on your site? The TOS or whatever they have?

I don't really care what COPPA is, 'cause I'm over 13 years of age. Haha

Even though, the COPPA law has been instated, it does not go in affect for another year I believe. This one year is supposed to give all the web sites on the internet time to comply with the law.

Chase and Justin,
Thanks for your replies, I think I may just use what the UBB does, and I won't rush anything now I know it doesn't go into effect for a year.
