I think that to complete TWF, JP should add a chatroom. This would make it a lot easier for getting people's questions answered, and would really make this place an actual online village. I mean think about it, we each have our own little home (profile), a town newsletter when things are updated (Notifacation Email), a town center with postings (The Forum Itself) and to top it off, a lobby (chatroom)!

Ok, I know what you are thinking: Chatroom, but those are for losers! But it would be VERY beneficial to TWF, AND it would really seperate it from all the other webmaster resources sites out there. People like Justin and the other moderators who are ALWAYS on checking posts can just logon to the chatroom and answer questions there.

There are many free chatroom programs around, and if none of them suffice, why not get all the many talented perl programmers together and put together an amazing chatroom?

Since I came up with this great Idea, all I ask is for is my name on the top of every page with a link to one of my web sites, a special "Tribute to RJ D'Angelo" section with pictures of me, a short biography, and maybe a live video of me talking and some Audio clips, this web hosting company does support that, right? just kidding, obviously, I don't want a video of me, but a tribute page would be nice. LOL, just kidding, but it would be cool if I could be a moderator (hint, hint)

I think this would be a good idea, it really tops off the community, now all we need is a burger joint

Go Ahead, tell me what you think of the idea.

Im not sure about the chat idea, it might work might not, if it does, does that mean people will stop posting and ask someone in real?! which then means if someone else has the problem/comment they cant read a post already about it?!
I dunno . Anyway www.geekvillage.com jus opened up a chat for all the forum users and visitors. I'd like to see how that works out.

I don't think you should have a chat room that is open all the time, nobody would post in the forums and it would hog the server. However, I would have a live chat hosted here sometimes, maybe every Saturday or Sunday, something like that! That would be cool.

Man, I really though everyone would like it.

Think about it, what if you are having a problem on your web site that needs to be fixed really quick? The chatroom would be right there waiting.

Th forums would still be useful for the "I-need-an-answer-but-not-right-away" questions, and for web site critiques, and also if no one in the chatroom can help you.

What do you think NOW?

I think a chat could work, if it was scheduled.
I dont know if TWF users would use the chat, a forum is alot more convenient. You come look through the posts, maybe post yourself, then go back on with other things.
Geekvillage.com chat there is hardly anyone there, and some of there boards get a ton of posts daily.
But there's no harm in trying it Smiling.

The great thing about a forum is that all of the questions/answeres are saved, for other people to view. Going through archived threads can be very helpful. A chat room could not do this .

I agree with Orpheus. Connect to an IRC server and join a chat room if you need almost-instant responses.

Maybe we could start an IRC channel on EFnet or somthing. (like #webmastering or somthing like that?)

True, the questions aren't saved, but nevertheless, it would give users the ability to talk in real time and get their questions answered immediately. Im not saying it will replace the forums. The forums still stand as the number 1 part of the site, a chatroom is a good thing to have to really setup an online community.

But I dont really wanna start another fight over it. Maybe it was a bad idea.

i don't think the chat would be successful, probably be empty most of the time.

I disagree, I think the chatroom would get plenty of visitors a day. TWF gets so many visitors, why wouldnt any of them hang aroundin the chatroom? I know I would.

Well- I think if they have a scheduled chat, maybe every Saturday between 7pm-12pm or something would be good. I also think that maybe an IRC applet would work best.

I agree with Justin and Matt - scheduled would be the best. Like has been brought up, it shouldn't replace the forums and I think it might do that if it were there 24 hours a day 7 days a week... Maybe on Saturdays and Sundays, have like a "get-together" type of thing - would be cool to just chat with other members.

I like the idea but I offer advice

I kinda like the idea. I don't like that it would be 24-7 though. I think a scheduled chat for like say Mondays, Wednesdays, and the weekends from 7PM-1AM or somethin.

OK, let's compromise. I do agree, althought it is not intended to replace the forums, it probably will, so why don't we setup an IRC channel and applet and have it on a seperate page like /chat or something, and have it online only on Saturdays and Sundays from 7am to 1PM? What do you think JP?

I do like the idea of scheduled chats.
Can I shelve this until we get the new design out?
In fact see a new post entitled 'New Design for TFR!' which I will soon be putting up.
