I don't know what happened to Boardzilla. Everything collapsed around the holidays at the beginning of this year. Hopefully it starts back up, that way I can use that instead of UBB.
Many projects have a way of doing that. There is the initial excitement, when everybody wants to be involved, but soon interest just dies out. It is absolutely essential on a project like that to have someone in charge of everything acting as a "motivator", every day checking in with people working on the project and not letting anything go undone. I think if someone like that were present on the project, it would have been finished already..
naw, it did NOT die out. Justin is working on a Perl/MySQL version and he just told me he has time to work on it.

Yes, BoardZilla actually isn't dead. I'm been taking my good old time (about 6 months by now?), but I promise that it will be done before the end of August. The core will, then it will be open source...
