I’ve got the same problem. They say next fall for DSL and cable. I could get ISDN but paying per minute would kill me. For now I’m on a steady 56K (48K actually) connection.
49.3K on my machine with my modem. I brought home a machine with connection problems this weekend and was able to get on at an even greater speed with better throughput. I guess my $5 modem isn't all that great. The people that I was working on the machine for, at their house, check this out, 26K connect speed and their throughput, measured in bytes not Kbytes! Sux to be them!

DSL costs around $500 per month including 1 (one) GB
At work ?
Usually 2Gb/s to the "new backbone".
(Well, only around 300Mb/s, since there are only two fibre lines at my desk)
Right now ... 16Mb/s ... but that's more than enough for me.
(The system with the cd-writer has the full 2Gb )
i'm in the same boat as Chad and Adam except that there IS cable modem in my town, just my parents are too cheap to pay for it. I have a 33.6 modem (I'm too lazy to stick in the 56k modem that isn't being used).
I live in the booneys. I get a 24.400 connection on good days i can get 3k download. heh. The areas animals can someitmes run faster then that sheesh.

JP & Kyle, with your T-1's, just curiously, what kind of d/l and u/l speeds do you get?
With my DSL, I get 10-12 up and about 30 down. Could get faster up, but don't want to spend the extra $20 to goto the next step.
Reason I asked is company I do temp work for has a T-1, but it is also used to handle all the network traffic to their corporate headquarters, e-mail, etc. which is 500 miles due north in Seattle, and consequently, think the best d/l speed I have seen on it was about 16-18kb
At work - T1 (that's all I know)
At home - 33.6 (actual speed is way below that )
I don't do a lot of surfing at home anymore, now that I'm online all day at work (after I get home I usually don't feel like looking at another computer screen for a good 4-5 hours). In a couple of months I may have the choice of either getting a new machine at home or getting cable access. Hmmmm.... I will definitely switch ISP's now that I have a permanent residence and don't need Sympatico's roaming anymore.
56K. Man, didn't know DSL was still hard to get in some places. There are lots of DSL providers around me, for about $39.99 per month for 640K receive and 90K transmit.
gotta 56k, but never connect over 40k. however, i've been told connection speed means little it's ur "thru put" or something like that matters.
makes sense to me because i use other providers from time to time and connect at 56k but it's slow as hell. then when i use my main provider and connect at 32-40k it's a lot faster.

I feel bad. Many of my friends in neighboring towns can't get broadband in any form and I've got a choice of both. Cable is $30 a month for cable TV customers and $40 for the others and DSL is $40 and up depending on the speed. I wound up with cable since it was available first and since I once used SNET as my ISP on dial-up. With the experiences I had, I wouldn't trust them to be able to network 2 tin cans with a piece of string. DSL is almost certainly beyond their capabilities.
Broadband is the greatest thing to happen to the internet since Al Gore invented it.

56 K here... DSL is supposedly available, but I can't get it at home because I'm not within 3 miles from the central office . I am thinking about getting cable, though, but I have heard bad things about sharing the bandwidth as well as security concerns.
Brian, I can just say this: When cable modems work the way they are supposed to is awesome. It doesn't even compare to the one phone line 56k days of yore.
However. (heh) When there are problems, they are horrible. Once my provider launched an ad blitz, and within a week, speed slowed down to what felt like 300 baud. It took them like two weeks to upgrade to handle the new people. So, YES. If there are a ton of people on the network, connection is horrible.
As far as security is concerned, I have heard rumors that the next generation of cable modems will have personal firewall software in them. Until then get some firewall software or some port scanning software or something.
Brian, don't let either of those concerns scare you away from cable. The horror stories of bogged-down speed due to overuse are blown out of proportion. They have happened, especially when cable first starts in an area and markets aggressively. The sudden influx of new users can overload a system, but in most cases it's rectified quickly. And the service does gain and lose speed depending on the hour of the day. At night, when everyone is home and surfing my cable is noticably slower than during non-peak hours. However, when slow it's 10-15 times faster than 56K dial-up and when at it's best it's 50 times faster. Factor in the point that it's cheaper than dial-up service once you get rid of that dedicated phone line and it's a no-brainer.
As far as most of us are concerned, security is a non-issue. The people that have gotten burned have been the cause of the trouble, not the innocent victim. If you keep file sharing turned off and install a simple personal firewall like BlackIce Defender or LockDown2000, you're secure. I've never heard of a successful attack against a broadband customer who took those precautions.
to all you people who are whining about your ****py 40-50k connections, I connect at 24k and never more because, according to USWest I have 'incompatible equipment' in my phone lines. Ive bitched and bitched and bitched to no avail. Cant get DSL because I have 'incompatible equipment' in my phone lines. Cable connections are not available in my area. So eithere I dish out 3k a month for a T1 (or whatever they cost, sure theyre expensive as hell) or I connect at 24k.
PRAISE GOD THAT YOU CONNECT AT 50K! IM IN INTERNET HELL!!!
Sounds like you guys in the States have it better off than us in Australia. High speed Internet Access is very expensive over here. We can use cable and satellite but most people just use 56k modem. Currently there is a new technology ADSL being developed. Not sure when it will be available but I hope soon.
We people in the United States are VERY lucky when it comes to internet access. We've generally got a plethora of connection choices. Even in areas without broadband capabilities a person usually has a choice among many many competing ISPs and can get decent service for a decent price. And for those with dial-up connections, even our phone service is cheap, reliable and unlimited. I've heard horror stories about folks in England that have to pay for their phone connections <SHUDDER>BY THE MINUTE</SHUDDER>
Howard, have you looked into satellite? You're stuck with dial-up speed upstream transmissions, but the download speeds can be really impressive.
I have cable modem and havnt had any problems since i got which was about 6 months ago. The speed is awesome. My buddy has DSL and mine is quite a bit faster then his. It all has to do with where you are located.
I have @home cable and even at high-traffic periods it still runs circles around the dial-up I used to have. They charge $50 mo. for current tv cable customers. Unfortunately, the customer service reps apparently have competitions for the most-stupid-and-useless-answer-of-the-month.
I would say I am now saving money since it eliminated the second line, but....the ol' ball-and-chain insisted we keep line #2. I can only surmise there is some genetic compulsion to yak incessantly with friends about nothing......

I use a regular, old-fashioned, half-ass 56k modem (It's the American way!). 56k modems are way underrated. They are pretty quick for something that's free. Paying for an ISP, however, is something entirely different. Thank God for Freei.com.
What's really getting to me is that fact that "broadband" has become a national issue here in Sweden and I am not able to get my hands on it. They are even talking of government subsidies to make sure EVERYONE can get fast Internet access at home. All around me apartment buildings are adding fast Internet connections ( and most of the ppl living in them don't want it or don't know how to appreciate it) and here I am....on a modem!
I am moving to Stockholm (swedish capital)soon for to work within the "industry" but I bet that wherever I happen to settle down wont have any kind of broadband. Murphy's law. It never fails.
Oh btw...in Sweden there is no flat rate. We pay by the minute.
We get a 33.6Kbps via dial-up modem (usually full speed).
Cable & ADSL are due later this year in Israel. We have decent ISP's but the connection to the net in the USA isn't so good. The good news for us is that the national phone company has lowered prices significantly for the ISP's numbers. We now pay less than 10 cents an hour.
By the way, the internet surfers actually tried to strike against the phone rates several months ago. The plan was for everyone to stay off the net for one night. I don't know how effective it really was, but I think the publicity was worth it. It brought up the problem of internet prices and the change in phone rates.
I use a 56K modem at the moment, but I'm connecting at speeds around 48K.
In a week or two hopefully, I'll be getting a cable modem. Only $29.95/month with no bandwidth restrictions.
ADSL (128K up, 384-1.5 mbps down) is I believe $39.95/month. SDSL is over $100.00/month here. Another DSL provider (independent provider...uses their own equipment and not the phone company's), will be rolling out in a few weeks with ADSL (including 'net access), for only $29.95/month.

Uggh! This is one "useless question" that I could do without!
In this old town, the very fastest we get is 56kbps and it is very often only about 30kbps
That is the fastest for like 200 miles in any direction. DSL is supposed to be here at the end of this year, but I am not holding my breathe.
I am *so* jealous of you guys.

Thanks for giving me a forum to bitch in
Jes

$39/month DSL @ 1000 down and 100 up. As I always say, not too shabby...
(It helps that I'm 100ft from a CO.

Hehe.
