What car should I buy?
I am looking for a used sports car for about 4 or 5k. I don't have much experience buying cars so what should I be looking for. How many miles should a car like this have on it?

4 or 5k what? £ $USD $CAD $AUS $NZD? Not trying to be impolite, but the Internet is an international medium and we have no idea where you're from.
There's also the wot's your fave car thread, that could give you some ideas.

i find vdubs to be a little pricier than the more common, Ford, Vauxhall/GM etc
But they are well built and last well so the price is worth it.
Besides, if he hasn't bought a car by now he'll have legs like Arnie (used to have), so he'll just run everywhere

I think that to choose German car will be the best solution. For example Volkswagen Taureg is looking attractive.

I think this car should take about 75,000 miles. Toyota Celica will be the best choice.

I own a small Audi auto parts shop and compared to other brands you have a superior quality... but again, Audi does cost a little bit more, but it is well worth it...

I am surprised nobody mentioned Car Talk yet

You can actually call in to the NPR radio show and ask any question however tangentially related to cars.
They have advised many buyers how to get the car of their dreams without getting divorced.
You can also listen to their shows online
I have listened to the show for years, and I don't even have a car (I am basically in NYC, no car needed).
