What are your webmastering specialities? I consider myself to be a designer/developer - I love the challenge of creating something that's functional and attractive at the same time. Along with that comes an interest in usability, globalization, things like that... I'm not much into the promotion and marketing side of things.
How did you get started? It was the summer of 1997. I downloaded Nestcape Communicator Gold and was very excited to find out that Wow! I can make my own web page! So, I started on something in Composer, proceeded to get frustrated with the program and its limitations and got into the code pretty quickly. Then I was lucky enough to get a great co-op job doing intranet work and went on from there.
What else do you like to do? Hmmmm.... lately I've been spending a lot of time outside - swimming, lying in the sun, having a beer on the patio with friends... getting a great tan in the process! I like to read a lot too, watch sports on TV (I'm a couch jock!), do crafty stuff...

What are your webmastering specialities? I deal with managing the day-to-day responsibilities of running a large content site. I update the site daily with cutting-edge sports fan analysis, insight, and commentary that goes beyond the scores. I also manage the Sports Central Message Boards (SCMB).
How did you get started? I was inspired off other web sites and my cousin who had one prior to me. I started off on a Geocities address - my current site was my first site, it was evolved a lot. I have had other sites along the way, though.
What else do you like to do? I'd love to do something in the computer industry, which I love, or possibly a sports journalism career.

What are your webmastering specialities? I pride myself on been unique. I keep upto date with most web related news and keep a cloes eye on the usability "code". I can make any sort of site ranging from simple html basic pages to fully working personal organisers with the works.
How did you get started? The beginning of 2000 is when I started to show an interest. I wasn't really bothered with the web all that much before then, THEN i saw some friends messing around with pages and thought... cool. I started with geocities, page builder and those sites were more than crap, then i found out about html and pretty much straight after i moved on to more advanced languages, and to sum it up... here i am today.
What else do you like to do? Getting pissed and going out on the pull is always good. My hobbie is making web sites but I do that all day at work anyway's so it's not so much of a "big" part of my free time. When i'm not socialising i'm busy playing quake online or just for a laugh.

Specialties: I make a damn fine cup o' coffee! Design and front end work is what I love, I have had to get into asp pretty deep over the last couple of years or so and love it too. Basically I love working contracts for sme's (small to medium business'): designing and scripting the whole dang thing. After saying that I would say my speciality is not showing my clients what I really think of them when they are at their frustrating best!!
Start?: I got started in Web Dev because I was researching an essay at Uni on JFK assasination, I came a cross a really cool site (design-wise) and was hooked. Then when I needed to jump into a career to get money to finance my filmmaking i decided to get into IT. LOTS OF MONEY!! I did an Economics degree at Uni so I had to start basically from scratch. Got a contract with Compaq and BANG I was off!
Hobbies: Film-making, scriptwriting, anything to do with film. I love playing golf, watching the rugby and looking at the world from the bottom of a schooner of beer! And I keep my mind agile by coming up with excuses as to why I cant visit my wife's parents on the weekend!

What are your webmastering specialities? Between myself and my husband we build websites for local businesses, including e-commerce stores & flash. We also do SEO work for them on a monthly contract.
How did you get started? I was made redundant from my bank job 2 years ago and out of boredom decided to build a website for the company hubby was working for (in Pagemill) which turned out ok & they liked it so I thought we could make money at this and as hubby is a natural born salesman (not the horrid slimey kind!!) he sells them & I build them. Still just the two of us although we've got soooooo much work on right now I don't know how we cope sometimes!
What else do you like to do? Although we are really busy work wise we are very strict with ourselves and make sure that we have at least a couple of hours a night away from "work" (hard when you also work from home!) I enjoy watching sci-fi stuff, DVD's and listening to music. We have just built a sauna and have a pool in the garden so enjoy both of those. Drinking vodka and hanging out with friends.

What are your webmastering specialities?
My strengths are in the design and usability department. I hand code HTML, Javascript, CSS, etc. I had every intention of expanding my personal knowledge to include more server side abilities such as Perl and PHP. I'd also like to venture into Flash. Unfortunately, one of the realities of self-employment is that there just isn't enough time for it all. As a result, I find it more cost effective to use the occasional subcontractor. Over time, I've developed a decent network of specialists.
How did you get started?
As a hobby really. I am a graduate of the University of View Source. I did a few personal sites as a learning vehicle and then a pro bono site for a local non profit group. Suddenly, people were paying me but I was having a hard time juggling this with the day job which I despised and was keeping me away from home too much. One day I sat down, did the math, and quit the day job.
One task I do not enjoy is sales. So recently my wife has come on board as my Sales Manager.
What else do you like to do?
Like the Webmistress, we are a couple working together at home. It IS tough to draw the line between work and play but we manage. I am a fan of jazz music, good movies, good food and good scotch. I'm also a fairly avid computer gamer.

Website URL:http://www.medicmom.com is my very first web site. I am a little ashamed of it but what the hey. I haven't updated it in forever. *shame*
My new business site is under major construction.
What are your webmastering specialities?I don't really "specialize" in any of it. Just give it my best shot to do it all. I have done a lot of reading on usability and color and hope to specialize in this. I also love DHTML but have learned that it doesn't work well with anything but IE.
How did you get started?I started homeschooling my daughter and collected so many favorites that they were cluttering my hard drive so I decided to build a web site to put them on. Hence...medicmom.com
After doing a site for a local fire department I was encouraged by a friend who had a web design business several years ago to start my own. He gave me tons of graphics programs, built me a smokin computer, helped me get set up as a reseller and said, "You can do it!"
What else do you like to do?I spend time with my daughter, participate in a remote control airplane club and am a volunteer and Instructor for a local fire department. I also spend lots of time in classes to keep my Paramedic license current and training up to par. I would like to get good enough at web design so that it can be my full time job when I get too worn out to be a medic.

Tables =] I enjoy doing much of my work with tables. I suggest never opening the code of one of my sites, you wont be able to follow all the Tables =] Other than that I believe just generic HTML (not that special really...) and making it all look good. I also think of myself as good with CSS and matching link colors with layouts well.
How did you get started?
Wondered how I could make a web site like all the neato ones I was looking at. Then found Netscape Composer on my HD and used that for a while. Got hosted on Xoom (aka NBCi). Never did any work through Geocities or any editors like those. I pride myself in that fact.
What else do you like to do?
I would like to manage my own servers in the future, but as for other stuff I like to do now, mostly normal teenage stuff -- friends, parties (them nerdy ones where we watch TV and play computer

What are your webmastering specialities? I'm not crazy about the word "webmaster" but I consider myself to be very good at analyzing what a client needs, building an intuitive; but not boring interface, and then exceeding their expectations. Although it has nothing to do with the web, I'm also very good at doing the "I'm to sexy" dance!
How did you get started? When I got my first computer I immediatley learned how to program it (plain old BASIC and batch programming). Shortly after that I got involved with Desktop Publishing (it was HUGE in the eighties). Then I started learning Networking/mainframes/servers etc. Then when the web rolled around I found that I had almost a perfect skill set for programming/designing/installing for the web, kinda scary.
What else do you like to do? I love watching Formula 1, playing tennis, playing music (piano & drums), playing with my dog Bows, listening to good music, watching a good movie, playing video games, reading a good book, I WISH I HAD MORE TIME FOR THIS STUFF!!

I also cringe when called a 'webmaster'. I prefer to stay server side, and leave the whole design thing to someone with an imagination. I 'specialize' in server-side scripting, and database design and integration.
How did you get started?
I don't remember. I played with HTML on and off all through JR high and high school. I then got bored of HTML, and wanted more. I remember seeing a clock on a website once, so I had to have on of my own. Found and tore appart the JavaScript that made it run. I basically went on a rampage 'viewing source' and dismantling it to find how it worked. That was the biggest part of my learning.
What else do you like to do?
I'm an intense online gamer. Spend a lot of time playing modifications for Half Life. Also play Age of Empires with my dad. I attend occasional LAN parties and whatnot.
Future:
I would like to sky dive and scuba dive before I take another nose dive. A 'beanless beanbag' just got here today from an Amazon order I placed. If that's any indication of how lazy I am right now. Unfortunatly, my life revolves around computers, and that's why I started this thread.

I started to play with Corel Draw 3.0 when I was 12 or so. After a while that couldn't satisfy my needs, so I tried Photoshop and loved it (still). Then came the HTML and a bit later the CSS, javascript, ASP and a bit of ASP. Three years ago more and more people started to ask me if I wanted to desgin their interfaces (mostly for standalone applications or CD-Roms) and internet/intranet sites. Currently I have a parttime job (8 hrs a week), a study (40 hrs a week) and I'm working on three sites... and my girlfriend's complaining...she says she wants to see me more often (how could that be

How did you get started? I was a freelance photojournalist but decided it wasnt me so slowly ventured into frelance photographer, I did some photos for a guy selling concrete birdbaths and gnomes etc that he wanted to post on a web site, I was curious as to how he wanted to use them (copyright and price etc) so had a look, it was a horrid site and thought I could do better, so I looked for a few HTM how to sites and started learning, even thou this was the first tiem ever on a pc, i picked up HTML real easy, soon to find myself teaching others, including my brother is is a computer engineer. I still have a long way to go but hopefully will one day work as a designer, or programmer. One of my main problems is trying to learn to many things at once when i should be doing one at a time.
What else do you like to do? still do photography for calendars, postcards etc when i can, dont enjoy it as much as i used to, when it was a hobby i loved it, when money, bills, paperwork came into it, it took the fun out of it some. i love riding trail bikes, love building model cars, was addicted to jigsaw puzzles once when i smashed me knee up, biggest ever did was 10,000 pce, can do a small 250-500 pce within an hour. I am a panelbeater (bodyman) by trade and love my pride and joy a '76 corvette which i rebuilt a while back, love hot rods, muscle cars ... I love to pull things apart, to see how they work, i still have an old clock i pulled apart when i was a kid, i keep it as a reminder that things can be put back together and work again (even thou this one is still in bits) and seems i love to ramble on

I made a music video to it, was pretty cool for age 11 and made everyone think I would be a computer wizard, I am just a hardcore web and computer tech today. I enjoy long hours in Photoshop and can easily whip up an 80 page site in 5 days. Logoing, navigation etc, maybe 4 or 5 tight php scripts. My love is photoshop and I enjoy making the sites I make in photoshop with Dreamweaver, melding those two applications into a web page is what I love to do. I hope to a have firm understanding in some sort of database and form programming environment. I am very interested in PHP and MySQL but find it difficult to devote the time to it enough to get the understanding to even work at bash with it yet.

Al, how's things in Columbus? I lived there for two years prior to moving here to Jersey. I liked it there, and more importantly, I had a cable connection rather than 28.8K here.
You a Buckeye fan/student? I'm visiting your site now and am very impressed.

What are your webmastering specialities?
Well...Good question....First of all, I like to design sites from scratch. I may use the Frontpage editor, but I find that manipulating tables and color scheming is rather the task. I also create my own graphics, headers, buttons etc. I never really liked taking from someone else. I also create my own Desktop Themes, Screen Savers, Web Templates, etc. I find that installing and customizing CGI Scripts is my strong point. Not too many people can handle CGI as others can handle PHP better. Oh well, that should be good enough to say.
How did you get started? I wanted to have my own homepage online, but things didn't work out when I had to learn html all by myself. I found a friend in England through a chat room that decided to help me out by creating a page and then teaching me little by little.
What else do you like to do?
Graphics, Web Development, Genealogy, History, Biographies, Arts, Reading, Dancing, etc etc etc.

Hello everyone.
I stumbled upon this site yesterday and after reading some interesting posts, I thought that this could be a cool place to hang out on the net. Here is a little bit about myself...
Name: Sanj
From: Toronto, Canada
Age: 28
Occupation:Freelance Web Designer (soon to be Developer as well)
Website URL: http://www.sanjayparmar.com
What are your webmastering specialities? Photoshop, hand coding HTML,
Javascript, Flash, Illustrator, and Interface design.
How did you get started?
I saw a few pages when I first started surfing the net in 96 and thought to myself, "I should be able do something like this."
I remember opening up Netscape Composer and sitting on it for like 12 hrs straight until I finished my first site. After that, I was hooked.
I used FrontPage in the beginning, but realized that if I am going to consider myself a real designer, I should learn hand coding and thats what I did. Now I make a comp of sites in Photoshop, slice it myself using guides and then hand code using Allaire Homesite or notepad.
What else do you like to do?
I love to surf the net, work out in the gym, snowboard, go dancing to house music clubs, hang out with my wife and friends.
Look forward to speaking with all of you!!
Sanj

How did you get started? In 19ninetysomething, I discovered the internet thanks to my stepfather's dialup account and laptop. About a few weeks later, I made my crappy site on Angelfire. What are your webmastering specialities? I don't know...lol I love making the graphical things on the site and do all the basic stuff. When I want to add complicated stuff and can't seem to get it going (which happens occasionally...lol) I yell for my dad to come get the bugs out! He is my "technical support" lol!
How did you get started? With Geocities Web Page Builder...(oh the shame!!!) It was up in about an hour, stayed up about an hour then my dad said "Take that down! You are going to learn how to make a webpage!"...lol So he sat down at one computer and me at the next one and he showed me the basics of coding. Then he left me with Coldfusion 4.0 and said have fun!!!...lol!
What else do you like to do? Well, I love to draw!!! You can look at some of my drawings at http://www.geocities.com/sab2000sab/sandrasart.html They are showed in a Java Applet so it might not work on all browsers...
They don't look that good on the web, though!
I basically like to do ANYTHING that has to do with art, graphic design, photography...you get the idea!...lol I love playing with Adobe Photoshop 6.0! I don't see how I got by doing graphics before without it!...lol I sing in a 300 person choir called the Michigan/Ohio Concert Choir. We just got done (this weekend) with our ten Christmas concerts! (Shooo, I am tired!!!) Other than that I enjoy life and try to help others do the same!

How did you get started? 1997. Was delighted to discover that Netscape's browser package had a web page design program - Composer. Didn't like the lack of control and decided to learn HTML. At the same time I took on-line classes with ZDU to learn Paint Shop Pro.

What are your webmastering specialities? Um... I don't manage to be too specialist as I don't have as much time as I would like to concentrate on the web stuff. I like to think I can do a bit of everything. (Jack of all trades, master of none?)
I'm learning some PHP and I'm really keen on CSS though I've still got a long way to go with it.
How did you get started? At university - that seems a very long time ago now! I'd done a little bit, then one summer job they plonked me in front of a computer and said 'there you go, please build us an Intranet site'. I learned SO much stuff, the most important thing was that if you don't know, somewhere on the web you can find out.

Plus all the ones in my signature. And I just bought a new one for a blogging community.
What are your webmastering specialities? I'm just learning how to do scripts, learning CSS and PHP, but I'm good at the editing and making the graphics! DreamWeaver, Top Style and Paint Shop Pro are my best friends.
How did you get started? Back in '93 I built our first site on AOL. Then, Geocities. Finally we got our own domain, now I'm a domain junkie!
What else do you like to do? Read, watch movies, shop, relax with the whole family home.

Old, old sites and such.
I'm 39 now, work-at-home mom (WAHM!) still though.
GNS Hosting started back in the summer of 2002.
Also I have Southern Designs which is sitting right now, I need to get some new desktops on there.
There are webrings here that I run as well.
I have conquered (well at least in my opinion) .CSS and I'm learning more and more about PHP as time goes on. I have also learned a lot about MySQL databases over the past year.

What are your webmastering specialities? My speciality lies in Perl programming and database work to power sites, although lately I've been dragged into project management. I've always been a more of a hands-on kind of guy, and as I'm now managing a team I find it difficult to find time to go under-the-hood and get my hands dirty - which I really really miss.
How did you get started? Been working the internet since I was young. Been around on usenet, arpanet since I was 9 or 10. Fascination grew from my fathers keen interest and now I am a complete net junkie.
What else do you like to do? You mean there's a life beyond my monitor? Nah! I don't believe you.

WAIT!! WAIT!!! DON'T DO IT!!!!! Seriously - if you're going to go out and buy something at least get something decent (like Macromedia's Dreamweaver). It is, however, quite easy to do this all for free using a freebie code editor and your own brain
FP is notorious for writing bad code and all sorts of other things you don't want

Thanks for info, I will be getting dream weaver in future and delete the notions for a quick fix with front page. It probably will go well with the macromedia flash paperwight cd and manuals that I have now. (I often want to fly before I can crawl) Gonna gut it out and do some retooling /formatting of stanwoodbottles.com Started from scratch earlier and just getting rid of that color scheme and the green and pink palm trees has done alot of good. not up on web yet but looking good on comp and going with links on side and body to right. Thankyou for the advice lots of help and ive only been a member about 8 hours. thanks joenov

None really. I guess I can say marketing and promotion.
How did you get started?
Unlike most of you, I didn't take a single class. I just taught myself thru the best teacher available... the internet itself (including TWF!!!). As the link says above, my first site was, and still is a Geocities website I started in 1996 to help my college alumni keep in touch with each other. Then I made another site, and then another, and so on. I'm not a web professional and I've never made a dime from it (although I'm not against the notion
What else do you like to do? I love to play competitive slow-pitch softball, watching the New York Mets, and television (both professionally and as couch-potato)
And I added another question:
Anything else? I live in Charlotte, NC (southeast USA), but I was born and raised on Long Island (suburbs of NYC).

As to the Stay at home dad thing, I can make money from home doing web development and hosting (though so far not much since I'm not wanting to draw much attention to myself until I get my licensing out of the way). My wife made at the time close to $17/hr and I was making $8/hr. The math clearly dictated that we'd fare better if I stayed home. We'd have had to pay half my paycheck just for Child Care, there'd be more wear and tear on the car, and our tax bracket would be lower if I quit or went part time (actually I went part time, 20hrs week @ Kinko's until they scaled back on hours, in 5 months I've worked 4 days). So now I'm 100% stay at home, doing web development and hosting.

How I Got Started: Back in middle school days my dad bought me a Timex Sinclair touch pad computer with a huge 16k of memory that I started learning QBasic and developed my first log rolling down the screen game. It attached to the black & white T.V. and read off of cassette tapes. In school I continued this on an Apple II in the library and taught others as part of a school curiculum thing.
After leaving my dad to live with my mother, I droped computers completely to become a troubled party-going teenager. My next experience was a guy she married that had a Commador, attached to a color T.V.! This was my first experience with the old BBS. I was about 18 at the time. Nothing happened really. I soon moved to waste even more of my life in Tennesse, even became homeless for 6 months.
I moved back to dad's and started college with doctor in mind. Moving after about a year to help my mother and stepdad in thier new video rental business. To run it actually. Doing this I got back into computers, but in a bookkeeping way. I even learned to use PC Anywhere to connect to the other stores. I was about 24.
I married at 25 and left the video business for a more lucrative resturant management position. By age 28 or 29 I had a modernization thing happen. I drop the sucky resturant thing and worked for NCR Corp. to stage POS computer systems. We bought a computer and went online AOL style (AOL sucks!). The modem was a blazing 1400, we made sandwiches between page downloads. After upgrading to the new 56k I began to form an interest in how this web stuff was done. I new about files and stuff, so I thought there had to be a way. I found the VIEW SOURCE option!!!! Then research pointed me to put this stuff in a notepad with an .html extension. I clicked the file and was hooked. Look at what I did!
Now I run a Celeron 333 with 192megs of Ram, 16megs of ATI video, and 10gigs of HDD. I use Win98 (upgrading to 2000 pro soon) with Apache, have PHP4 installed along with MySQL and Perl. For images I use PhotoImpact 5, for programming I use HTML Kit (the best) (FrontPage is for kids), and just recently added Flash 5 for splash and more.
I have my A+ cert. and have plans for others. As a business, I've designed about 6 sites for pay and have 2 in the works now. Plus I do networking for another business as a contractor. This is from word of mouth, I haven't even got advertisment or a business card. But I do use a contract to protect me legally and worksheets for the clients. I charge about $300 for a basic 3-4 pg site. My wife has the most expensive so far at freeastrology.net. When I get this Flash thing down, $500 will be my lowest price.
Anyway, I hope my biz takes off or I get hired by a good design company in the future.

Megan, did you know you can make those Flash links keep pulsing for a sec. when the mouse outs? Right now they just stop in thier tracks on mouse out. No biggie, I still have a ways to go too.
Anyway, I hope to be a big part of this forum in the future. No one I know in person either cares nor understands anything I do. HTML what? Are you excited about Nationals this week? It's too bad that we probably won't be getting TV coverage or anything
Do you know anyone who is going? We've got a couple of people reporting for Gymn.ca (including Kate Richardson!) but that's about all the info I've got

I'm also (or was) the founder of FlashPlanet.com which was sold to Internet.com in early year 2000 which was about when I stopped working on it. Since then, I have been working a little with Hewlett-Packard, Exodus.net, etc, but mostly as free lancer and on our own projects.
I have been working with web development for the past 7-8 years. Some of the stuff I work with: PHP, Perl/CGI, MySQL, HTML, JavaScript, Flash, ActionScripts, PhotoShop, DreamWeaver, ASP, VB, MS SQL, Unix/Linux and more. You can say I do a little of everything
How did you get started?
I got interested in programming back in the BBS era. I started with coding PPL for my PCB BBS with ANSI/ASCII graphic.

How did you get started? Been a designer and artist all my life, after dabbling in architecture during my formative years, i discovered fine art, and then New Media a few years ago and started to design various and sundry things, most of whice are no longer online. Unlike a fine chianti, they did NOT get better with age. I am very much a designer and artist more than I am a programmer/coder, so my skills lie in the design of a site and interface, not the code of one. I love to work in Flash, for its animation as well as user interface capabilities. I tend to work on highly designed projects that are many layers deep of a design process and methodology.
What else do you like to do avid film buff, and coffee addict. When i am not doing web based stuff i am usually at a Starbucks with a a copy of "I.D." or "Metropolis" or at my work studio creating something.

I was really excited about Nationals, a lot of the people I do sites for were competing but really, only Jen, Amanda and David did as well as they could! About TV coverage- I agree, it sucks really. I'm happy we get US Nationals coverage though. What a surprise though, to see Danielle win!!
I've been doing so much updating on all my sites but Amelie's site is on another server and it's down right now so there are no results, it bugs me really. I hope I can get it fixed soon!

How did you get started?
In the early morning hours of September 11th I was in my bedroom/workspace happily pounding away on my keyboard working on a frivilous but probably lucrative writing project. My Dad pounded on my door and told me to turn on my television. I closed the Word Window, turned on the TV and watched it until January. I never reopened Word on that computer, I never resumed work on that project.
In January I finally decided to do something.
I bought a new computer and began surfing the Internet seeking ideas about how I could best use my particular skills. I got bogged down trying to reorganize the HTML bookmark file that I imported from the old computer. I didn't want to use the cascading menus, I wanted to organize the links onto pages. I barely knew the difference between an HTML tag and a DKNY tag at the time so I am pleased that within two months I had a website and within four months I had my own domain and twelve pages...
Will Andilinks ever make money? Not in any way that I can imagine, and that is fine because I can support it. But if it should ever make money or be instrumental in my making money, I'll take the money.

What are your webmastering specialities?
Pixel Pushing, but I'm reasonably competent with very basic Unix server administration and the "business" part of registering and maintaining domains. Unfortunately, I'm also good at customer service. It's unfortunate because it means that I'm the one who always has to do it!
How did you get started?
I made myself a homepage back in 1994. The first incarnation of it was non-graphical because I didn't have a graphical browser (didn't have the right connection). When I did get around to getting the right connection set up, I downloaded Netscape 1.1 and got out my Paint Shop Pro (I think it was about version 3 at the time) and made myself some graphics because most of what was "out there" and available was pretty dorky, IMHO. For a few years I kept making web pages and reading online tutorials and generally learning as much as I could about web design, and then after I got a job at my ISP (mostly tech support, but also eventually system administration), it just sort of snowballed into a full-blown business.
What else do you like to do?
Read (history, biography, historial romance, science fiction, and occasionally Ann Rice), take photographs, travel, play with my kids, pet the cat. I still push pixels for my own enjoyment, as well.
Guess that's about it.

What are your webmastering specialities? I am not a language person - I have very little experience with Perl, CGI, Java, Javascript, etc. I create/maintain the majority of my work through simple text editor programs. Maintaining GoErie.com and our client sites requires a lot of organization and attention to detail. I generally work 60+ hours/week but I love the work so much that some of that is my own fault. Most of what I learned has been self-taught or by taking the initiative in other jobs to learn as much as I possibly could.
How did you get started? I have worked with computers since I was 11 years old. I knew growing up that I wanted to work with PCs, but of course the Internet as we know it didn't exist back then, so I sort of fell into this particular field. I've worked with hardware - can build PCs and troubleshoot 'em, etc., and have worked in or at least dabbled in a variety of PC areas (networking, etc.). I've used BBSs and other 'pre-modern day Internet' tools. After I got my first dial-up account through our local ISP, I took a tech support with them and eventually became a systems administrator. I used that experience to learn about Internet protocols, etc. (the back-end stuff) and some Linux. One of my jobs eventually became updating the ISP's web site. I really enjoyed that part of my job and I completely learned those skills from scratch. A year later my current boss contacted me about becoming the Producer for a new company he was starting - and because the job focused on the design/development/management of web sites, I was attracted to the opportunity. I've been with the company now since its creation almost 6 years ago.
What else do you like to do? All kinds of geeky computer stuff, news, The History Channel, photography, golf, biking, following the New York Yankees, The Beatles, watching movies, being an all-around couch potato and homebody.

What are your webmastering specialities?: I am pretty front end. I'm not too interested in getting too deep. I am more interested in promotion methods, SEO stuff, optimizing sites and graphics etc. However I can install the average script, and clean up some javascript here and there as well. I know how to implement Perl, PHP, SSI blah blah.. All that stuff. I am employed as webmaster for a Melbourne based software company. I like to make fast search engine friendly sites. I do try

Um, My post was too long, so I have to break it up (sorry)
How did you get started? Gee, this story again? I hate telling this bit. Ok, I purchased a computer so that I can play CIVILIZATION! Ok, so shoot me! The Amiga 500 kinda became well ..old. Then one day, (took many years for that day to come) ..I kinda got sick of CIV, and had a look through my ISP admin area, where they mentioned something about saving a notepad document with .html on the end. I tried it. "WOW - A web page". So I forgot all about CIV and spent the next few months stealing code from all the sites that I could find. Eventually, I got so used to the code, that I just started writing it (still in notepad). It wasn't for a good six months that I became aware that there are such things as teeeext eeeeditoooors (duh). (Enter Arachnophelia). "WOW - Look! It has colors, and cleans my code!" .."I Really like this web dev stuff!" ..By now it was too late. I was scrounging through javascript code sites, downloading 100GB (lol - may as well have) images for my sites that took no less than 1 minutes to load. I had midi's and wavs running. I was right into it. I used frames in frames in frames (aughh!) ..javascript all over the place. ..but I was having lots of fun! Well, gee to cut a long story shot, eventually (15 months ago) I applied for a webmaster job, and got it. Now I don't have to paint houses anymore. (I was a painter).
What else do you like to do? I am pretty boring I guess. When I'm not at work, or making my own sites, I am usually watching CNN, or reading the CNN website. If I've got any time left I'll watch WWE
I am finally cured of my CIV adiction, which dates back to the C64! ..but I think I jumped out of the frying pan, into the fire LOL ..maybe I should get back to playing Civ. (Civ III is out now, and they just released MP - Drewls!). Hmm.. Maybe I could spare a few hours on the weekend ??

Hey Mark. Do you skydive ? Jumpers first skydive hundreds of times from aircraft before attempting to BASE jump, which is undoubtedly the world's most extreme sport. Would love to do it too !

What are your webmastering specialities?
When I first started webmastering I used to frontpage my tables, but now I can hand code them.. I've been learning PHP for the pst few months now and I'm getting quite good. I'm glad that I dont have to hand code each page now, all dynamically driven. I'm good with psp7, but I'm thinking I should switch to Photoshop. But, PSP8 is coming out in the next few weeks so I'll think I'll stick with Jasc instead of Adobe.
How did you get started?
I first got started when I got frontpage which I think came with IE. I created a few meaningless sites with bright colors and annoying animated gifs and too much javascript. I moved onto a gaming site which I stuck with for about 10 months, but unfortunately the competition was fierce, so the site went down the drain. At this stage I was still using Frontpage, the graphics program Arcsoft Photostudio 2000 and the featureless SSI.
A few more small insignificant sites came along, as did my skills in my new aquired graphics program PSP7. With some more work, and my effort to better understand html, about 6 months later my site is what it is now. (The Webmistress: I'm gonna keep the blue!
)
What else do you like to do?
I love playing soccer and basketball. I also enjoy athletics, such as long jump and the 100m sprint. You'll find me at the movies a couple of times a month and the rest of the time I'll be at school or right here in front of the computer.

I like to think I have a little of everything, with exception to editing and copy writing. I'm a programmer, graphic designer and creative director.
How did you get started?
I started while I was driving truck and got my first CPU, I was facinated by the web and spent hours viewing source code and leaning how it worked. I landed my first job in 2000 at a local ISP (Amerion), then I started my own business a year later, then merged with a larger company a year ago.
What else do you like to do?
I love spending time with my kids and girlfriend. I go to the gym a lot, and like to go out clubbing every now and then. What are your webmastering specialities? let's see. i know html, reteaching myself php/javascript becasue o how long it's been since i used them. i know java, c , scheme, lisp, perl...ummm... i think there's more but i'm not gonna bother remembering right now
How did you get started? computers or websites?we've had a computer in my house since i was about the age of one and i've always had a technically oriented mind. (woo hoo gotta love apple IIe. did someone mention commadore 64? i remember those fondly. do you remember intellivision? kalecovision? yeah. i can spit off a shitload of systems whose companies that make them don't even exit anymore. i'm that old.) webmastering? i took a course via vhs for fun. used netscape composer and quickly started cursing it out for it's failures. played with literally all the free editors around and found they were worse, so by the end of the week i had taught myself html and was using the most simplistic text editor i know of: notepad. now if someoen wants a real editor, don't get something like frontpage or dreamweaver. they add their own code and remove you form the actual code. they are meant for people that don't know stuff. use emacs or xemacs (if you're reliant upon the borg i feel bad for you.) xemacs.com (might be .org) and get the best PROGRAMMING editor i have ever found. it's made by REAL programmers. the kind that know how to program without debuggers. all it does is "pretty printing" (text indenting), syntax highlighting, and parenthesis matching. if you need more there's an issue you have and if this were back in the 80s when the local idiot was not able to walk into the public library, dl a worm editor and make a worm, then you wouldn't be programming. sorry, but todays editors are made for the braindead to use. the result is rather sub-optimal code with absolutely no modularity. the modularity is the reliance of the younger people upon debuggers to fix their code.you can get debuggers to plug into xemacs if you need them, as well as compilers, but i suggest learning how to code for real... and not using them...if you do that right you'll find debuggers annoying as they try to fix your mistakes before you've finished the block and made any.
What else do you like to do? hang out with friends, listen to music, play REAL football (i refuse to call it by what the rest of america calls it... then again, my home town was at least one-third portugese immigrants and they all called it what it really is. that fake stuff popularized by the nfl wasn't as popular in my town)
on that photogallery thing.. i have 3 php pages i'm willing to donate that will allow the webmaster to make sub-directories to the picture directory.. i guess one per person adding tot eh photo collection. the index.php calls a page gallery.php that turns subdirectoried into galleries and uses a third page that creates thumbs on the fly
oh yeah, here's a personal pet peeve: idiots that think they know how to use animated gifs... twice over when they use them as a background. there's only ONCE i ever saw it used acceptably as a background. it was a water gif used as the background to a poem about water. the only other thing on the page was the link back. so many people think they can use animated gifs. then they do so many animated gifs the page looks ugly. and worse off, the idots that have those things to trail the cursor. i say things because i've seen images as well as text. it's distracting at best. the first thing you learn in any design class is that you have to consider focal points. have too many and you've lost everything.
and i have a thread on me... http://www.webmaster-forums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21735 incase you're still interested in getting to know me

What are your webmastering specialities?- Let me think? None.
How did you get started? I had entertained the idea of a website for some time. I know lots of artsy folks and thought I'd like to start a site to showcase their talents. It didn't take long to figure out that this would be almost impossible for someone with no knowledge of web design, short of hiring someone to do it for me. So I got my wife involved and we found a solution for a couple of web building dummies.
What else do you like to do? I've been playing music since I was 10 years old. Played on the road for about 12-15 years. Worked with blues greats Frank Frost & Sam Carr (The Jellyroll Kings) recorded a CD in 1994 with Fingers Taylor who was Jimmy Buffet's harp player for about 25 years. I bought a high dollar DV video camera and trying to get up to speed to do a documentary (easier said than done) I spend every other waking moment playing baseball with my son.

What are your webmastering specialities? I am technically an application developer, my 9-5 job includes Database, Vb, coldfusion, java/vb script and ASP programming. What I really enjoy best is developing interfaces and web site creation has been lots of fun.
How did you get started? 2001 my employer initialized a goal to migrate all the existing applications we had been working on to their respective web based equivalents. My interest in ASP was born, I have really enjoyed it. I just recently realized that maybe just maybe this could be my gateway to job independance and working my own schedules and on my own terms. I am a webmaster newbie that has a lot to learn in reference to how the "web" business is done. Hopefully one day I can live the dream some of you are already living. I am learning by the tons in these forums, thanks to all who post.

I'm certified in HTML, JavaScript, PHP and am getting ready for MySQL certification. I use Macromedia Fireworks for designing web pages. Overall experience in web design; programming sums up to 7 years.
How did you get started?
I got started out using AngelFire(Lycos) free web pages. I didn't like the designs and I couldn't get anything out of the page maker so I fiddled around with the source-code option. Terrible text/link based web pages were my specialty.
What else do you like to do?
I like to work... WORK WORK WORK, none of that silly wimp work, HARD WORK. If I'm not working then I feel like I'm worthless. Right now I'm out of a job and just freelance web designing BUT everyday I see myself doing nothing so I create a design, image or script for now reason. haha

How did you get started?
I started a collecting website which has metamorphasesed into coolcollecting.com. This is often my staging area for trying out new stuff. Back when I first started it, I was using Netscape Composer. I then "upgraded" to Frontpage, and continue to use Frontpage combined with just coding in Scite.

I collect Superman stuff, including some comics and action figure. I also like to buy sci-fi/action movies on DVD. I built an arcade machine and also modded an X-Box, both of which I play to relieve stress. And, of course, I like to hang out with my wife and our 7-month old boy, Joshua.
