You have jugs over there too? Bags are easier to handle, easier to pour, probably use less plastic, fit in the fridge better.... remember that scene in Big Daddy when the kid spills the milk all over the floor? That wouldn't have happened if the milk was in a bag!
Oh yes, cartons, we have those here too for smaller amounts (up to 2 litres). You can get 3 litres in a bag though - easier and cheaper to buy more at once.
We're not old fashioned! Not everyone has their milk delivered but it does mean that you don't run out and have to go to the shops just to have your cereal in the morning!
Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....
Wow! I don't think we've had milk delivery here since the 60's. My boss used to be a milkman back then.
There seems to be a difference in grocery shopping habits between Europeans and North Americans. Over here people will go to the grocery store once a week, stock up, and that's it. May have to run out for the a bag of milk once in awhile. It seems to me that Europeans are more likely to make small trips more frequently? Or am I wrong about that?
Over here you wouldn't be worrying about having to run out for milk in the morning - you'd assume that there was already some stashed in the fridge.
Well personally I do the main shopping at the supermarket once a fortnight but go to the local corner shop for things like milk and bread as & when we need them. I would say this is pretty standard for most people in the UK with variations on how often - weekly or monthly - they stock up at the supermarket.
Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....
Not everyone has milk delivered, but it is useful if you use a lot of milk and people with kids find it very useful to have it delivered so you know there is always milk each morning for them. As I said delivered milk is in glass bottles (recycled) but you can get it from shops either in cartons or plastic bottles.
Don't quite get the idea of bags & Big Jugs here would have rude conitations!!
Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....
LOL! Yeah, I never thought of it that way but yesterday when I was doing a google search for milk the other day to try to find a picture of a bag of milk several rather lewd photos came up (and their adult content filter was on!).
Bags and jugs.... ahem... just let you buy in bigger quanitites which is what people want here... I guess we North Americans are just used to living on a larger scale.
It seemed to me when I was in Germany that my hosts would go shopping more often than we do here. they also leave their orange juice out and don't refrigerate it...which is odd, at least to me.
I like to buy the 4 litre jugs ( I prefer BIG jugs) of 1% milk, I dont drink as much milk as a I used to, just use it for shakes or cereal.
LOL.... okay, enough of the lewd connotations! All in good fun though
I went through this phase in high school when I hardly drank any milk at all... just didn't like the taste, but now I go through a 4L bag a week by myself!
When I was younger, my good dear mother nearly went into personal bankruptcy trying to keep up with my milk habit. I would polish off 1.5 - 2L a day. *mooooo*
My sister is so she doesn't have any meat or dairy produce (not even wearing leather shoes!) so she drinks soya milk which I think tastes disgusting! Anyone tried that, or goats milk (never tried that myself though)?
Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....
Webmistress: I have a few vegetarian buddies, but the healthiest are the ones who can eat dairy, and eggs. they are called octo-lavians(sp?) I think. The one girl who is a hardcore vegan is extremely frail. and doesnt seem to full of energy.
I have an aunt and uncle who are vegetarian, but their two sons aren't. My aunt makes great brownies. One day I was over at my cousin's house, and we decided to have some brownies (shh, don't tell). Well, my brother and cousin finished the milk, so my cousin handed me the soy milk and said something like "You'll never tell the difference". I had my mouth crammed full of sticky brownies, and couldn't swallow, so I figured 'what the heck' and poured a glass... I couldn't believe it. It tastes like water with flour in it. Yuck!

We get the plastic gallon containers... 2 at a time. We drink lots of milk!
How is it easier to pour milk from a bag? I think it's easier to pour it from a plastic container with a handle!
Pictures:
It even comes in chocolate
A baby could use it

You get a special plastic container, with a handle, to hold the bag. Much lighter and smaller than a jug. Can't find a picture though....

Do you have milkmen to deliver your milk to your doorstep in the mornings? We get ours delivered in glass bottles by the pint.

Here in Holland people got their milk delivered to the doorstep until the late 70's / early 80's...
Conclusion: UK are oldfashioned compared to Holland
