My name is Jayne. I’m starting college next month to finish up getting my bachelor’s degree. My course concentration is in web development. I’ll be asking tons of questions and wanting advice. First being I’m going to need a job ASAP. I’m not thrilled with the idea of flipping burgers until graduation, May 09. I would like to do something in the field or related to it. I’ll have the technical knowledge to work with static web sites before the end of Spring semester. Any suggestions?Confused

Hi Jayne, welcome here!

A couple of tips for your job search:

  • while you're still in school, try contacting some local web development firms and ask if they have any subcontracting work. Some firms will hire most of their full time people from their subcontractors. There's also a lot of subcontracting work available online.
  • you could also try freelancing - working direclty for local businesses. It's tough to make contacts if you don't already know someone. Networking skills are really important here.
  • don't worry too much about taking a job that's not exactly what you want to do. You have to start somewhere! Once you've got some work experience you can gradually transition to a position that matches what you really want to do.
  • make sure you have a portfolio site - it helps a lot for employers to see what you can do

Good luck!

Hey Harris, how did you do on your job search? There's nothing wrong with doing a basic job just to get you by, some of the most fun I had was working in the cloakroom of a nightclub or on the phones on a helpdesk. Jobs are really what you make of them, usually it's the people you work with that make a job good, not what you're doing. Smiling
