Thanks for the welcome. I like that a whole lot more than the spam-welcome-message I received from these boards when I registered. Does everyone get that hosting-spam-message when they sign up or is it just me.
The setup fee is waived with this offer. You may also trade this credit towards the purchase of a more extensive hosting plan.
Please note that you WILL need to enter a credit card number to take advantage of this offer. If you do not notify them at the end of your three month trial Thinkhost WILL charge your credit card with the regular rate for the Smart Essentials package ($14.99/month). You must notify them if you wish to cancel your account after the three month offer is complete.
Thanks again for becoming a member of the forums. We hope to see you posting soon!
To be honest, it's the first time ever that I get spammed in a welcome message from a forum that I register at.
If I need services, or spam-mail, I don't register at forums for that but go directly to what I'm looking for normally, all mail that I receive with "offers" without me asking for it is spam in my book.
No harm done though, I just find it funny that someone is so desperate to sell their services that they spam it in forum-welcome-messages.
I don't need hosting either, I have a reseller account for my sites and am very happy where I am.
We've always had that welcome message in place but no one has complained about it before. It's sort of standard for forums, I think. It's built into the software anyway.
The free hosting offer was new in January. It is part of a special partnership we have with Thinkhost. We send it out in an email because there is no other way to hand out the promotion code without making it public in the forums.
I am sorry that you considered this to be spam. We will reconsider sending that out in the email. There is a PM that goes out to new members too so I think we can cancel the email and keep the hosting info in the PM.
Okay, based on your feedback we have disabled the welcome email. I know when I sign up for forums I always delete those immediately. So it's probably more of an annoyance than anything else. The code for the hosting offer is now in the welcome PM, and I took out most of the info and just linked it to the offer page. I hope that's better!
Thanks a lot for your feedback on this!! I figure if we get one complaint it means 10 others were bothered but didn't say anything
Thanks Megan, I'm sure that people will appreciate a welcome message a lot more when that message doesn't contain ads for hosting companies. I'm a moderator at v7n and in my experience it's hosting companies that are the biggest spammers on webmaster forums, together with affiliate spam, and I do get a little annoyed when I get confronted with another "offer" for a couple of months of free hosting and I guess I'm indeed not the only one.
I do understand the agressive ways of promoting a busyness when it's in an over-loaded niche like hosting but have little compassion for them when it's me that gets spammed. Spamming, to me, is an indication of a bad busyness that is desperate to get some cash. A good busyness doesn't need to use agressive methods to get clients because of the magical word-of-mouth that starts to work as soon as a busyness offers quality.
My current host, for example, was recommended to me by a friend who used to own a hosting company himself and that's the kind of credibility that makes a busyness grow better and more solid than any advertisement can do.
Anyway, this seems to be a relaxed community and I'm sorry to walk in complaining like I did. Please accept my apologies for it.
This is just a special offer that we've worked out with the company - it's definitely not intended to be spammy at all (although I can see now how it might be seen as such). I've actually been hosting with them for years so in a way it is a personal recommendation as well When we made up that email it was just because we needed a way to let people know about the promotion and how to take advantage of it. You're right that it was a little too much. The link to the page with more information should be enough for anyone who is interested.

Real estate is pretty expensive considering half the world wants to live here and the Netherlands being one of the most dense populated countries on our planet.
However, there are some multinationals who offer housing when you get a job with them.

Excellent moderation. By the way, do all the moderator buttons say mod_rater?
Anyway, is there really "doobie" talk going here?
Ferre, is that you in that pic? Who is that? Looks kinda like D. Snider, or maybe Maynard James Keenan.
I almost forgot... WELCOME!WELCOME!

Yep, that's me in the picture, and I'm also aware that there are a few famous people that look like me.
And no, there's no 'doobie-talk' going on, although it does promote a sense of brother/sisterhood to actually partake in a doobie-session with people, even when they are complete strangers, but I only do that in my own country because of the rather fascist laws considering doobies in the rest of the world.
So, are you a reverend in the "Cannabis Ministry?"
And what's with the dog in sheeps clothing. Would make for a great album cover... if he was being chased by a bunch of cats in dogs clothing.
