Hi,
I have developed a website and used Internet Explorer to view it when making it. However, when I load the pages in firefox it is not formatted the same - why is this? Doesn't firefox recognise certain html and css tags?

No, it's more like Internet Explorer doesn't handle certain things correctly. Firefox more strictly follows the standards set out by the W3C, whereas IE does it's own thing sometimes.
If you post a url we might be able to help you figure out what the problem is.

I have had the exact same problem, try preview in Firefox, forget IE*, it is rubbish. I had to re-upload new page to my server after IE gave me the wrong preview. Firefox is the correct preview. Don't go near IE!!!

That's a bit harsh, ChildOfEvil -- especially considering many visitors to the site don't know a browser from a hairbrush, so will use whatever comes on their computer.
Megan's recommendation to view in Firefox, Safari, or Opera first is good. They generally obey your CSS instructions (even when you say something you don't mean!) Internet Explorer bugs are well known, except for the newer IE7. But many of IE7 bugs are the old bugs in new places, so searching for solutions for IE usually comes up with something useful to fix that bugger.

True, but I have had nightmares as a result of using IE.
Imagin you have just made a masterpiece, and it took months, you put it online, 2 days later, you find it only works on IE, Imagin how that must feel. I have got a personal problem with IE, no offense to MS fans, but my PC is void of their products, except the OS.

The point is that Firefox is not formatting the pages properly whereas IE does, is this because the css I have used is not the correct standard?

No it's actually because IE doesn't follow the correct standard. You can have many different browsers installed on one computer so I would install
IE7
Ffox2
Opera9
Lynx (text browser)
If you have full control over your pc, you may want to install stan-alond version of IE6 as well - try Tredosoft for standalone installers

As far as cross-browser testing is concerned, it is good to have multiple machines and browsers to check it from. What is good in making a site first in Firefox is that the main quirks are plaid out first. After that you can check in other browsers especially IE which most visitors come from to get a better balance of what it should look like or use some css hacks... Although if your site is more geared towards webmasters or developers, they are probably using a better browser...

1) Its faster
2) Its more secure
3) It's an open source project, so there are loads of programmers actively looking for security holes before they're exploited
(compared to IE where they only have MS programmers to work on such things)
4) They comply with the standards unlike IE...
5) IE has a tendency to bloody crash!
