http://www.bravenet.com has free trackers - you can have up to three stat trackers - for free. The results do tell you which browser the person was using, what link they came from, etc. It's pretty good for a freebie.

Well there is a piece of Javascript code which shows the information that you need (I'm sure I can find it again ) but as already mentioned, Javascript can't write to a file.

well if you are looking for a free host that supports CGI's, as long as you don't mind ads, check hypermart.net i used to use them, not so bad..but only support CGI/PERL not PHP, CF, ASP, etc...and it only allows txt db. but for a few bucks you can get ad free and language support for what you need (or check sarvihosting.com when its back up, , thats who i use to host)

The Webmistress is right, it would be pretty hard to do without access to the server's log files or a writable directory somewhere. If you were just interested in the stats, there are a lot of counter services out there that you can use, but since you're trying to learn, that doesn't help you that much

Javascript and Java can't write to files without special permissions. Newer versions of Flash might be able to produce something that could write to a file, but I'm not a flash programmer so I'm grasping at straws here. Also, flash is a little harder than HTML.

It would be interesting to see if someone has a solution to this problem!

Well, I was hoping I could use the information I gained from web visitors so I could hack their computers... just kidding. Actually, like I said before I am just making this page to learn. I don't really know alot about programming and HTML seems pretty easy so far compared to some of the other languages, and a visitor log is just one of the many parts of my page that I am basically scrapping together from clips of code here and there.

Don't feel that your questions aren't any more valid than anyone else's here! We all had to start somewhere and there is no such thing as a stupid question - just stupid answers

Without paying for a third party script to be put onto each page and recorded remotely you would really need to have access to the log files from the server and I don't think many free hosts give this.

What specifically are you wanting this information for?
