As teammatt3 mentioned, visit opensourcecms.com

I personally prefer mambo, it has less bugs and a very user-friendly interface. Most important - it's free.

Also heard good things about eZpublish and Xaraya.

And one more thing - if you choose a nuke thing you WILL have security problems.

Regards,
Mike

Since Suzanne's post there has been new versions of eZ Publish, and possibly more importantly, a good bit more documentation.

Well worth a look.

Quote: Originally posted by Sulla
High I have been trying to decide what Content Managment System / Community System to use.

I just went through the same process last week. I finally decided on Friday of last week, and I was up and running friday night. You can check it out if you like, it's in my profile.

I checked out xoops.com, phpnuke, and postnuke.

I found xoops first and really liked it. Seems to have a lot going for it. But then I read about PHPNuke's community, large set of modules, etc.. Finally I decided on Postnuke, for a series of reasons which may or may not matter to you.

I narrowed it down to php/post away from xoops because of the large set of modules already made.

But between those two it came down to:

1. PostNuke is a source code fork from phpnuke. So it's based off the same code, but from what I've read, it has had extensive work on cleaning up the code, removing security issues, etc.. And a lot of the modules available on phpnuke can be made to work with postnuke.(haven't tried it, but that's what people have said in various forums)

2. There seems to be a lot of turmoil in the phpnuke community. Lots of fighting, issues over removing copyrights(which they can't prohibit due to gpl licenses), and general unhappiness.

With that said, I decided on postnuke, however one issue that does concern me is that it appears they lost their whole development team I believe in Novemeber or around that time. They since have built a new team to work on it.

It's open source php/mysql and GPL so it's free. It took me about 30 mins for the install on a standard hosting account.

Forums aren't built in, but I used pnphpbb.com from itsallbutstraw.com (whatever that means) and it's a fantastic integration of phpbb.

I've found several other modules to plug in and they have all works fine. (but you do have to make sure that they are compatible with the latest version. I've read about other people getting in trouble by installing a hack/module in that isn't compatible and it looks to be a mess)

I've seen evolution mentioned several times, but never made it to review.

Good luck in your search.

Article Manager from InteractiveTools.com: http://www.interactivetools.com/products/articlemanager

Only problem is it uses Perl/CGI and not PHP/MySQL. I'm considering running it on my site.

EZPublish
PMachine

Those two are the top of the heap as far as I'm concerned re: reasonable price, solid performance. While the price for the software is quite different, with EZPublish you'll be paying for the installation and customization quite a bit more than with PMachine but it's a far more robust and extensive application.
