Definitely, definitely, defintely XP, especially since it is a laptop; you likely won't be changing hardware on their, which you could run into problems with with XP's activation registration system.
In simple terms:
If you have 9x, XP finally offers the stable and secure OS you've been looking for.
If you have 2K already, the upgrade is NOT completely necessary. You already have the solid NT core XP is based off and thus you have the security and stabability alreday. However, you will gain user friendliness and a few added features with XP.
If you're buying a new computer and don't expect to be changing the hardware often, then definitely go XP! It's the wave of the future!

I'm going to wait for a few service packs or critical updates before I do anything to my win98SE. I'm a programmer as well as a gamer, I need my gaming system!
What will you be using the laptop for?
Number crunching or gaming?

I'm not sure Sony's are worth the price. I think you pay for the name. Just my opinion.
You may want to check the software you'll be running on it to see if it says which opperating systems it will perform on.

That's kuel. If I ever decide to get a laptop, I'll probably check them out. Right now I'm sticking to desktop clones.
