These are also good for anyone (like me) who has an Intel Mac but also runs Windows on it. (Through Parallels or BootCamp.) If you run Windows at all, that partition (or whatever) of your computer needs to be protected against viruses. I personally hate to shell out money to do that when it's not even my main OS. This way, I don't have to!
Man, that's a lot of parenthetical statements in one paragraph.
I have to agree with Renegade. Back when I used Norton, it used way too many resources for what it was doing. Open source tends to be less resource intensive in general than the big company paid equivalent.
With anti-virus solutions, the quality depends entirely on the strength of the research team. I still use McAfee Enterprise edition since my university has a site license. I understand that Kasperksy is very good and well worth the price you pay for it.
My suggestion is rethink your need for a free AV. They are only as good as the signature database and the research team!
Whenever there's a thread on online forums there's always a token idiot who can't resist popping up and saying: 'Use Linux/OSX: you won't get a virus!' I am that token idiot ...
Use Linux: you won't get a virus!
(sorry )
More seriously, not using Internet Explorer is a very good way of avoiding viruses. I ran Windows 2000 without anti-virus for years without getting problems, just didn't use IE and avoided dodgy software/web sites.

If you're looking for free anti-virus software, there is some out there. Just not Norton. Try these:
