I'm in the process of building my second server using some old parts (256mg ram, XP 1800, 6 gig hd). The ethernet card I have in it isn't working with Red Hat or Ubuntu. The other sever has a built in adapter so that doesn't help me find one. Do you have any recommendations for a linux compatible one? I found one at compusa that said it is compatible with linux, but I don't trust what the manufacture says.

What card have you got? Most are compatible. In fact, I think there are probably more ethernet network card drivers available in Linux than there are for Windows.

If you must get a new one, I know that Realtek 8139 chipsets work by default in the distros you mentioned.
