I need to get a new set of speakers because my old ones broke and they were going to be $35 to fix. Might as well get a new set.

Here are some sites I'm looking at:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=488
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProdList&cmd=pl&id=SP&mfg=all&start=60&numPages=4

I don't really know what brand is good so I'd like some advise on that. I'd like to spend around $50 or less. I have to buy from a Canadian site because otherwise I have to pay duty.

Thanks for any help.

I got a set of Nicole multimedia speakers (model sd969) a bit old now but they great speakers, even at half volume the neighbours 2 down can hear it, anything above that rattles everything off the shelf. Normal setting for me is at 3 (about 1/4 volume) with media player volume all the way down

I have had several brands of speakers in the past and worked for Geek Squad at Best Buy in the USA and have found three brands seem to have the best in overall performance.

Cambridge Soundworks ( My Current Favorite due to quality and Price)

Logitech ( Overall excellent speakers but a little too much in the highs with mediocre Mids)

Klipsch ( By far the best... But very Pricey)

Hope this helps.

ok, you want powered speakers? (one with the built-in amplifier) or just a speaker set (passive, requires an amplifier like your stereo)...

The Brands that are really good for the buck (for computer speakers) are:
Creative (Formerly Creative Labs) : They concentrate on soundcards and more recently speakerss, home and multimedia speaker system (system pertaining that it comes with an amplifier)... so for quality and price this is on top of the list...

Logitech : COncentrated on computer peripherals like mouse and keyboards, webcams and recently also on multimedia speakers... Good Quality, and really affordable for competing range...

Altec Lansing: The more popular brand... although they limit the science for lower-end models, they have good quality too, and have many selections... although im my experience, their subwoofers seem to die off earlier...

Labtec: Really good and affordable brand... they were previously the leader and compact yet powerful speaker systems for computers, the make and manufacturing is traditional, but acoustic science is applied to every model...

You can choose from a range of Stereo (2 speakers left and right), 2.1 (Left and right and a Sub-woofer), Quad (4 speakers, front left and right, rear left and right), 5.1 (5 speakers, front left and right, rear left and right, center channel, and sub), 7.1 (7 speakers, front left and right, rear left and right, middle left and right, center channel and sub)... You can get what your money is worth...

Aesthetically, alteclansing and creative leads...

If you decide on a certain set of models, please post it here and Ill be glad to review each...

Thanks a lot guys. Looks like I'll be going with Creative or Logitech based on what's availabe on the Canadian sites. If I get bored today I might run out and see what they have locally.

Thanks for all your advice!

Or better yet take a long an ipod or mp3 player and test the speakers for sound quality, pick a song or songs with full focal do dars (octan thingies) as some brands peak out at certain ranges and if your taste of music isn't within this range then you'll be limited to what you can blast and do the house work with

logitech gives you big bass and the sound quality is decent as well.. but i personally prefer either altec lansing or klipsch Smiling

Nicole multimedia speakers are the best speakers.
