A G5 shouldn't actually cost too much, if that's the direction you want to go.

If you're wanting a Mac (which I personally recommend, having switched about a year ago), you might check out Mac's refurbished page. I've bought all my computers off them refurbished. It's way cheaper. The one I just got was about $1,000 off.

After having been there and done that (College that is) I would recommend you call the faculty at your school for your studies field and ask them what it is they are using in their classroom/lab. This will give you a better idea before spending any money what it is you will most likely be using, and the requirements your classes will be needing. Software and hardware requirements will be much easier for you that way when it comes time to purchasing. If the faculty members you need to talk to are not available by phone they probably have Email addresses that they monitor.

Good Luck.

I agree with compwolf, although with graphic design they're probably using Mac's.

I'm looking for a new laptop too, but I want something that can run Linux. It is hard to find companies that make Linux laptops (especially since I want to be able to get it in Canada) but we managed to find a place north of Toronto called The Linux Store that has a good deal on a laptop (we've emailed them for more info on upgrades).

We looked at Dell too, because Liam is running Ubuntu on his Dell Laptop. What an annoying site! Would you plesae tell me what the specs are and stop trying to sell me all kinds of extra crap??? Noooooooo.

And what really pisses me off is that there is no non-Windows Vista O.S. option! You have to get Vista! There isn't even an XP option. It is possible to get a rebate for it if you want to install Linux but apparently it's not easy to do that.

Megan, Buy a mac - it's already running a Linux variation under the hood!

Plus you can get ubuntu distros that install on the Mac as well if you want to run 'proper' linux (and the cases are bloody cool!)
