Those are good after the fact, not as a preventative measure, from what I understand.

Really, the best offense is just to be very careful about what you download. Don't download a bunch of cracked and hacked software. Personally, I don't have any illegal software on my computer, and I almost never have spyware.

But I still run a check once a month or so, to be safe. Along with weekly virus scans, of course.

you must check and update those regularly... you must scan your computer regularly too... and the best thought is to defend your PC... get an updated anti-virus... with active monitoring... check with adaware and spybotS&D regularly... and you will get lesser infections, you may eventually get infected by a new virus, worm or trojan, but at least the damage would be lesser...

I have had very good luck using the microsoft versions of antispyware. It is currently called Windows Defender, and can be obtained at the following link.

Windows Defender

As timjpriebe said the dest defense is to be careful where and what you do. Unfortuneately many Gaming sites are rather riddled with spyware as well as seeming innocuous sites. No software is truly foolproof but you can atleast protectect yourself from of the less obvious threats.

ZeroSpyWare has worked OK for me.

As compwolf said, you can try Microsoft anti-spyware program that is called Windows Defender. It is free to download and install on your PC as long as you have a legit version of Windows XP.
